TheStacks
This weekend Fenny Roo and Zoey went with us to our in laws. They have a pool and a patio that the dogs love to play on. The were having a grand ole time; running after their ball (mostly in the grass), jumping in the pool, and chasing each other around the pool. HOURS of fun. Then on day two we noticed some bloody paw prints. Fenn's paws are pretty torn up and aggravated. He looks uncomfortable (he is licking them constantly and walking gingerly). I searched the archives but could not find an old post on this. My guess is no park for a couple of days. I am hesitant to put something on them unless I am home..... Suggestions welcome! Thanks, Fenny's Sore Feet
Sue R
I'd suspect that the combination of continuously wet feet and running on the concrete (don't some pools have a very rough, non-slip surface around them - kind of like sandpaper?) may have caused the problem. Poor Fenny! I'd limit his activity to grassy areas or other soft and non-abrasive surfaces until his feet improve. Have you thought to try Pad Heal or something similar? Best wishes to you and the good dogs, and especially Fenny's feet!
Guest TheRuffMuttGang
I leave 'em alone. They heal in a few days.
haleigh
I put some bag balm or udder cream on the pads and put on Joy's booties, which I only use for medical purposes. I keep that on for a while. It hydrates the paws, while preventing cracks while healing.
flrpwr52
Zoe did them same thing. I put bees wax on them and then had her wear her boots when she was outside. It took a couple days to heal.
TheStacks
I figured I would just leave him alone, but he is acting like a total weiny and milking it Fenny can be a little over dramatic about things and was acting as though walking down to go potty was KILLING HIM, not to mention the pouting..... They are pretty red....but I will just rest him today and play tomorrow by ear.
Allie Oop
Allie got some pretty good pad abrasions chasing after the ball on the sidewalk last weekend. I didn't know until I saw all of the blood spots covering the floor. I cleaned the pads good with Witchhazel and then we contained our playing to the grass for the rest of the week. They seem to have healed well.
MJWPG
I used New Skin (liquid bandaid), the one with the brush not the spray, and it protects the raw spots while they are healing. MJ
Guest TheRuffMuttGang
Fenny can be a little over dramatic about things I guess it's not just Ru...it must run in the family!!!
Guest amylobdell24
Ceana does this same thing at the pool too - including quicking all of her already short toenails! I stop the bleeding on her nails with cornstarch, give her a dose of doggie pain meds - like Rimadyl, previcox, metacam - whatever leftover doses I have of something - for a day of two, and she does fine. We avoid the pool and hard asphalt-like surfaces till they're better! I guess with enough licking a dog could create a secondary bacterial infection, so I'd keep an eye on things to make sure it's not getting bad, but my dog's have always been superficial things that healed very quickly. It'll be great for the paw
sluj
Would you treat cracked paws the same way? I've been putting on vit E oil to soften the pad to prevent further cracking, and trying to restrict puppy's movements, but as soon as she sets foot outside the door, it's onto pavement. Her boots just arrived, so I'll be giving that a try, but do you wrap the feet first?
Beth G
I was going to say bag balm too.
