Michael in Tx
I'd like take my dog with me when I ride, but we have a leash law here. Do any of you ride with a leashed dog? How do prevent accidents when the dog pulls? (Yes, my dog pulls, not often or badly, but it doesn't take much when you are on a bicycle.) Can you recommend any of the leash devices which attach to the bike? Thanks, Michael
Carlasl
I use a springer with my dogs and it works great http://www.springerusa.com/
Tassie
We're actually not allowed to ride with dogs on public roads in my State but we had to teach the dogs to be on leash wiht us riding when we were training for their Endurance Test (just had to use bike tracks and other walking tracks and a few private roads). We didn't use the Springer because you can't use it in the test - but I would like to have one. We just worked with the dogs in quiet areas first - low distractions - and then ventured out into more distracting areas when we felt they were listening. I would be training with my two on leash beside me - they got very good. You have to have pretty good obedience on your dog first, I would think, if you're just going to use a leash on its own. clara
http://www.sitstay.com/store/equip/eq6.shtml I've heard that "walkydogs" work well, and keep meaning to order one. I've found with my older dog who doesn't pull much, attaching the leash under my seat, behind my leg, with about 2 - 2 1/2 feet of leash between us works pretty well. That position helps with your balance (they can't pull you down very easily at all), and keeps your hands free to steer and break. Once they get used to running beside you it's easy. red dawg rob
i use a leash by ruff wear, it fastens around the waist with a hiking pack buckle, so you are hands free for control. the lead part from waist to dog is made like a bungee strech deal, unstrecthed it is 6ft and stretches to 10. this great for if dog should pull , or if ou dont notice the oncoming pee break he needs the stretch soesnt jerk his neck off or throw you to the ground. i have also found that using a harness instead of collar works really well, puts the pressure of any suddens stops by ether of yo at dogs shoulders rather than neck. it works for me. good luck
