bcluver4life
The shell of Jake's dew claw just came off this weekend. Now only remains the claw part like thing underneath. Though if you touch what was under the shell, he'll flinch back. I'm not to sure what to do about it. Has anyone ever had this happen before? I'm not sure what the thing is under the shell of his claw. I don't know how bad it may be hurting him. Should I get both of his dew claws removed now? I'm just really confused on this. I don't want anything to happen to Jake, like it getting infected or something.
juliepoudrier
What you're probably seeing is the "quick"--the soft tissue beneath the nail that nourishes the nail and from which the nail grows. If the outer protective nail has been knocked off, what's left will be sore. You'll want to protect it by wrapping it when Jake is going to be out running around. You could put a little antibiotic ointment on it to prevent infection, but leave it open to the air when he's not running around and risking doing worse to it. I personally would not have the front dew claws removed. Here's an old thread that discusses the pros and cons of front dew claw removal. AK Dog Doc posted some useful information there. http://www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.p...p;p=entry If you use the search function and search "dewclaws" you will find several other recent threads on broken dewclaws.
