Balian's_Mom
Anyone tried the Honest Kitchen dehyrated raw diet? Thinking of giving to my BC cross, as well as my old pointer cross who has immune issues. Sounds good to me, as I don't have the freezer space to do the totally raw thing. Thoughts? diane allen
I have used it, though it's a little pricey for daily use for three big dogs (everything being relative!). I've used all three types for various reasons at various times, and my dogs absolutely LOVE it. Even when my old guy was having lots of health issues, it was one thing he'd eat pretty regularly. It smells great. It does "set up" better if you put the hot water on it and leave it for about 10 minutes (taking a bit more planning time than I usually have!). You can also add other things - the company web site has many suggestions. They also recommend some "juices" you can use (sorta like soup broth) to rehydrate it with. But plain water works great. I use it a lot as my backup for raw, and when traveling. Highly recommended! diane
Maralynn
I've heard many good thing about The Honest Kitchen on another dog forum that I'm on. Alot of the folks keep it as back up to their regular raw. I've thought about giving it a try, but it's a little pricey for me, and I do have freezer space available ! You can also add in raw meat and bones to THK as you are able too. Their website gives suggested ratios.
Root Beer
I should look into that as a backup. The other morning I found I had completely forgotten to defrost anything for Speedy. He had to make do with some egg for the morning.
SoloRiver
I'm not crazy about it. Besides being prohibitively expensive, it's mostly roughage (I used the one with no grain -- Force, I believe) and I found that my dogs pooped copiously when I fed it. Solo also came to hate it, and would refuse to eat anything that it had touched after a week or so, even if there was only the tiniest blob of the stuff in there. Since Solo is generally not picky, and I don't like forcing my dogs to eat things that they actively despise, I gave up on it. The best raw "mixer" type food I've tried with my dogs is Solid Gold's Holistique Blend, which is a fish-based "lite" food designed to either be fed alone to dogs that need a low-cal, low-protein type diet, or can be fed with raw or cooked meat added for a higher octane diet. airbear
I didn't much care for the Honest Kitchen mix. It took longer to mix up, it really didn't look that healthy, and the dogs' poops were quite large and stinky. Also, by the time you add some fresh meat to it, it's pretty expensive (and I didn't want to feed them just that soupy mix). Much easier and cheaper to throw down a hunk of meat. If we're travelling and we can't pack meat, I bring tins of salmon or tuna, then when we get to our destination, I go to a grocery store and buy some meat. Balian's_Mom
OK, just picked up new EVO wet food, and it's claim is to be 95% beef. and label lists beef and beef broth, then goes straight into vitamins, so looks pretty good. Plus the picky kid LOVES it! Anyone else tried it? Would be cheaper and easier as well!!
haleigh
I use the Preference honest kitchen for a weekly (yes, weekly) supplement for Joy. When I feed it, I give as much as a chihuahua should eat. Otherwise, she's on a complete prey model raw diet supplemented with fish oil and vitamin E supplements. Dogs are obligate carnivores, and don't have the need to eat any veggies, grains, corns, fruits or wheats. The biggest give-away is looking at the mouth and general musculature. If freezer space is an issue, than I would buy a bunch of Cornish hens (about 5-10), some lamb heart (they're really small, about fist sized), and a beef liver. This lasts Joy about a week and a half, because I only feed her one time every two days. Fasting is extremely healthy...the only way the muscles in the stomach can strengthen is by feeding real big meals, and fasting for a day or two so that the stomach can contract to a small size. Dogs (and cats, but cats can get renal failure from this) fast in the while when they can't find prey. I would only do this with large dogs (border collie sized and up) and only with dogs 1 and up.
