rosefarm
Lily now definitely has a visual association with flags and boundary. Instruction for 4-9 are try and test them with distractions. I'm having a hard time coming up with distractions that will trick her. I can't lead her out, that just teaches her not to trust me when i'm leading her. I get the kids to run with her then dart off path, that got her once, though the sound turned her back. Treats won't do it, balls won't do it, she did resist a flock of turkeys yesterday, just paced outside the fence. I have her on a 26 ft retractable leash, and I'm not sure if she reacts to the resistance and knows she's not free. I think I'll just continue to walk her religiously because we always startle a deer in the morning a few times a week, that'll be the best test. Any ideas, on ways to test her decision making skills without letting her off lead? The beagles really don't know where their boundaries are, but the couple times that they were shocked on day 2 has made them more unsure about their world. I hate that it happened like that, but now they look to me for direction and actually have better recall so when I give them a verbal correction on a boundary - they stop instantly - they had terrible recall before, all nose - ears turned off so hey - that's not all bad. So for all considering said fence, border collie just about has it mastered. Day 9 thru 14 is unleashed supervision - I think she'll be ready. --Denise
bailey44
Denise, It sounds like your crew is really coming along! And what an interesting observation about your beagles listening better. I'm at the start like you--and have had a MAJOR setback by way of 6 inches of snow we still haven't had the weather to set the flags..not even to mention training. Wouldn't that be mean-- to expect Polly to pay attention to snow-buried boundaries--via the white flags in the white snow? I'm reading from you that Lilly seems to be respecting the boundaries and hasn't been shocked so maybe I'm missing something... I'm sure the experienced folks will come along and help with your questions. Charlene
rosefarm
No your not missing anything, I just don't want to rush the process, and your supposed to test them for 4 more days before trusting her sans leash, just don't know what else would tempt her aside from a deer. Yes white flags and white snow might be a little cruel I was glad that we finally had a thaw here in southern Indiana, I made dh go out and help me with flags, at least the poison ivy and chiggers aren't out yet. Hope yours goes well as well --Denise
