smileyzookie
Im trying to walk Riven more, for both our sakes. So, Ive been going around the blocks, and one specific house I have to walk past to get home just irks me. They have like 6ish little lap dogs and they yap the entire time we're in view, and Riven gets EXCITED by other dogs. She literally has no dog interaction. I dont know anyone with dogs, and there is no dog park, dog nothing here. (IM looking into a doggie daycare) - anyway - I tried to do this the ceasar millan way, and I think I annoyed the hell out of our neighbors cause the yappy dogs wouldnt shut the h#ll up. I stood between the yappy dog fence and Riven and refused to let Riven go to the fence. She stared at me and barked at me!! Now that she realized she can bark, she's barking in protest. So, I tried the whole treat thing and she still sat and stared at me but as soon as I moved, she was trying to run around me (not heeling) to get to the fence. A side note here, I've been slacking VERY bad with her, and she's not listening which is why Im trying to take her outside more for working with her. The difference now than when I first got her is she knows the commands, she's just chosing to pay attention to something else. ETA: sorry Im not sure if I made this clear lol, Im looking for suggestions on how to get her to ignore dogs. "leave it", "no" "eh eh" doesnt work. She zones in on dogs the instant they bark. I cant even calculate it like I could if we were sitting at home.
pammyd
<not an expert oppinion> I would let her say hello to the dogs, she is a dog and she should be interested in things the same species as her and if she dosent get to meat any at all these will be super interesting Give her a wee while to say hello and see what these yappy things are then "enough" and walk her away
Maralynn
Other dogs are huge distractions. When faced with a whole yard full of yappy ones, Riven's response isn't too surprising. I'd try a couple of things. First, work consistently on your training in a quiet area. If there is any way to avoid the house for now, do so. You want to have her training solid before you add in the distractions. And then add the distractions little by little. When you eventually go back past the house (like after a few weeks) do so when she has had plenty of exercise and is a bit tired. The combination of consistent training and tired dog may help alot. Also, have you worked on focus with her? I'm doing this with Kipp right now and it's great. It has really helped his "ADD" tendancies. Since I've been working on buliding focus, his interest in doing things with me has gone way up. His attitude is starting to change from a "I'm off to check everything out in the woods, barn, etc" to a "what are we going to do now?!" I'm using his ball for a reward, but yummy treats work great, too.
smileyzookie
How do you train focus?
WyoBC
The way I have been training Black Jack to focus is I go out to our yard or somewhere quite and work on "sit", "down" etc. but only for like two minutes at a time until he shows more interest in working longer. Start with just a few sits and a few downs, then after a few days move on to more and more sits and downs at a time. It will help his focus knowing that he doesn't have to work on it for so long. But be sure not to lose his interest or it will make it harder later.
smileyzookie
I tried something like that with Riven after the dog incident when I got home. But she would sit and stare, but just started barking at me. Her barking at me is really hacking me off lol. I think it could be she is used to us trying to get her to speak, so she's guessing why Im having her sit there and thats what she thinks IM wanting, or she's being demanding. Maralynn
Here is an article that helps to explain teaching focus Visit My Website. With Kipp I started by having him sit before I threw the ball. As soon as he grasped that concept, I'd hold the ball until he looked at my face. The second he did, I'd say "yes" and throw it for him. Then I just slowly lengthen the amount of time I have him look at me before I throw the ball. By slowly I mean I lengthen it a second at a time, so by the end of the week I was up to about 8-10 seconds (some dogs take longer to get to this point). Now I'm to the point with him where I'm having him go to the heal position to get his reward. The thing I really like about focus is that it helps a dog become highly motivated to learn. The dog becomes an eager student, which makes your job easier
smileyzookie
That is fabulous. I will definately try that!!!!! Thanks so much for letting me know. Rivens always tried to guess what I want, and if I just stare at her she lays on her back like, I give up so I'll just be submissive. I'll definately try this, now IM all excited lol
