Brandon M
When measuring a dogs height do you measure up to the shoulders and to the tallest point on their back?
Kat's Dogs
depends on what you are measuring for.... usually to the shoulders.
PSmitty
Height measurement is usually taken at the withers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Withers When I was trying to measure Alex, I stood him next to a wall, laid a pencil evenly across his withers and made a mark on the wall. Then I used the measuring tape to see how tall that was.
Dana Nichols
You also have to be careful that your dog is standing correctly or you can get a pretty wide variety of measurements. This webpage has a good photograph & description of how to measure your dog: http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library/measure.htm The photograph is a good depiction of how your dog should be standing. Be careful that they aren't crouching or you may get a measurement several inches lower than they should measure (which can make a big difference if you are relying on your measurement for what height the dog might be jumping in competition). For nearly all types of dog events, the measurement is to the highest part of the dog's withers. You can feel the boney protrusion of the withers with your fingers. A dog that is a bit steeper in the shoulder angle will have withers that are farther forward. A dog with more slope to their shoulder will have withers farther back.
