shelb'smum
My little precious one has been snapping at puppies lately.... over treats over play buddies.... just snapping at puppies?!?! She is SO so...ummm word come to mind....... uhhhh..... submissive to every other dog.... and yesterday has snapped at about 3 puppies... and the day before snapped at 2 puppies. each time she has been placed in a "time out" meaning leashed and taken out of the park and made to go over obedience drills for minutes. then let back in after she is calmed down.... This is a new behavior and I am not sure how to correct it. she never bites... she just yells at them and snaps the air. She does this at home to Wicket and she gets corrected for it and whatever she was fighting over gets taken away and put up for the night. but now it is moving outside home and Into the park. ETA: After she is corrected she is just fine with the puppy. and will either give it kisses or ignore it.
Liz P
Could you please describe what is happening a little more clearly? Give examples with as much detail as possible.
painted_ponies
My little precious one has been snapping at puppies lately.... she never bites... she just yells at them and snaps the air. Doesn't everyone? Puppies, at least according to Violet, come with zero manners and must be taught their place. In our puppy Faith's case, Violet is absolutely correct. I yell and snap at Faith myself - it's self-preservation. Seriously, is it possible she's just defending herself from annoying puppies? If so, I wouldn't correct her for it as long as she's not actually trying to hurt them.
shelb'smum
OK the most recent example is when I gave shelby's "boyfriend" dog a treat at the park. Shelby and this puppy were both scrounging for crumbs from it when shelby starts snapping and barking at this puppy. or if a puppy comes up and tries to play with Wicket.... shelby will snap and bark raising heckles bearing teeth. or if a puppy is giving her the submissive licks like she gives everyother dog she snaps and barks. and there is one puppy if she sees her her heckles raise and she watchs if this puppy comes near her she yells at her and snaps and barks... so on
SincereArtisan
My dog Idolon has a very similar behavior to your Shelb. I have to watch young dogs begging to play with her because she doesn't accept/enjoy their attention. She's very picky about her young playmates, and if a young pup, younger dog, any dog she does not deem to be an 'elder', she with air snap, bare her teeth and growl at them if they persist. If I call her out, she'll drop the act and walk away, because she knows she gets punished otherwise. The leashing her every time this happens and walking away sounds good. But it seems like she also needs a lesson or two on how to share. If Ido or Rune snaps at another dog for trying to get 'her' ball or treat, I call her out with a firm "No! Ido/Rune, bad DOG!" leash her, and have her sit RIGHT at my side while the other dog gets to play with the toy, or gets handed a treat without her interference. In most cases, it was over a toy, and I'd make her sit and watch for 5 minutes or so as everyone but her got to play. If she stood up, lunged, etc, I'd correct her and place her in a sit. This sort of thing was MUCH less desirable than walking off to do other fun stuff, and it worked wonders for future reminders.
