Root Beer
I second that! It is absolutely the best book on dogs that I have read.
WyoBC
I have been going to buy it, I just haven't yet. I'll have to do that.
wildairbc
Is that the one with the dog that has seizures? If so, I think what they did to that dog was beyond cruel.
airbear
I actually hated that book. The dogs given away, the poor dog with seizures ... I guess I am blessed that I haven't experienced those kinds of problems with my dogs, but I felt kinda betrayed by the picture of the happy dog on the cover. I thought it would be a nice pleasant book to read on the plane, and I actually felt sick when I was finished reading it. ETA: I should mention I am a real Pollyanna when it comes to books. I like to read about happy things. James Herriot is about my favourite. Books are an escape for me. If I had wanted to get depressed, I would have watched the news. ShoresDog
Is this book by Patricia McConnell? I loved The Other End of the Leash by her. Same author?
SoloRiver
No, it's by someone whose name I can't recall. I remember at the time I read it feeling like someone had scooped me -- grad student in Pennsylvania, gets a Border Collie, it turns out to be nuts, etc. (this is becoming a genre of books unto itself -- the Crazy Border Collie Memoir). Dammit, that's my book! Anyway, it made me wince. She makes many, many mistakes and bad decisions and doesn't appear to gain any insight or learn anything from them. Too much emotion, not enough logic or compassion and in the end, the dog she claims to love desperately suffers because of it.
sluj
I was confused, because I was planning to buy the McConnell book: I think this is the one referred to? Not sure which one the OP meant though.
Root Beer
I don't know about the OP, but I meant the one by Patricia McConnell that sluj linked. I'm not familiar with the other one. McConnell's book is very uplifting, I think, but not in a hokey way.
SoloRiver
Ah. I didn't know about the McConnell book. I was referring to the one by Elizabeth Rose. Only read that one if you've got a strong stomach; it was as frustrating as "The Hidden Life of Dogs" by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas. My guess would be that anything by Patricia McConnell would be awesome.

airbear
I don't know about the OP, but I meant the one by Patricia McConnell that sluj linked. Oops! Sorry, I was referring to the one by Elizabeth Rose, same as Melanie. Warning: cute picture of dog belies darkness of her "memoirs".
Sorienew
Oops! Sorry, I was referring to the one by Elizabeth Rose, same as Melanie. Warning: cute picture of dog belies darkness of her "memoirs". The book is by Patricia B. McConnell. I still say it was good.
Root Beer
It's a shame that McConnell's book shares a title with one like that. I really can't recommend McConnell's book enough. It really helped me to stop feeling guilty about not being able to "fix" Speedy's issues completely. It's not just a book for people who have problem dogs, though. Anyone who wants to understand why dogs act the way they do would really enjoy it.
WyoBC
I just got a book called "Lessons from a Sheep Dog" By Phillip Miller. It's really good so far. It's a true story of a border collie that went from a bad home and mean, to the best sheep dog he had. I have only gotten to the second chapter but it's a good read so far. Rebecca, Irena Farm
Lesson from a Sheepdog is a classic, even among non-dog people (religious people). If you've a religious bent (or wish you had one), I can highly recommend both it, and A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, which isn't nearly as snoringly dry as it sounds, if you are interested in sheep. In that one he relates a lot about his life tending island and range sheep - really, really neat, and both very quick reads. I'm in a frenzy to get the new Patricia McConnell book - I've heard her talking a bit about it and it sounds right up my alley. I love her other stuff. No extra money and won't have for a while. And my library doesn't have it yet, arrggghh.
WyoBC
Man I was out of it last night. I meant to put Phillip Keller, not Phillip Miller. I feel dumb now I am religious to a point, I don't go to church much but that's a different story. Thanks I'll have to check those books out. I think I'll see if they have that Patricia McConnell book in town. That's the one that isn't bad isn't it?
