Raw Feeders

I hope this is in the right section. I consider good nutrition as "health"!!

Anyway, I just found a great new source of raw meats and I'm looking for ideas of what to ask for. I usually feed chicken backs/necks or turkey necks as the RBM portion of Speedy's diet.

I'd like to add more variety, but I honestly have no idea what to ask if they could sell me.

I know there are tons of websites and lists, but I'm just looking for some quick real-life suggestions here.

Anybody?

Do you have a raw food co-op in your area? We have a really good one here in southern CA. They offer all kinds of stuff...my #1 bitch particularly likes the lamb breasts (wonder why)...they come in big slabs, and I cut them into 1 or 2 rib widths and feed those. We also get pork neck bones and some beef rib pieces, but the bones in the beef are really too hard for them to crunch. So when they're down to little pieces, small enough to choke on, I take them away. We also get chicken thighs really cheap, too, and all kinds of organ meats. Variety is good,

Anna

I would agree that Variety is good!

What is the nature of this new source?

Might be helpful to be able to advise if given more info as to the nature of the source.

My pack get a variety of fin, feather and fur.

I second (third?) the idea of using red meat and fish as well as poultry. Meaty pork, veal or lamb necks are usually fairly inexpensive, as well as other cuts you can find that aren't "prime" human food. Some grocery stores or meat markets will order cases for you at a better price that buying individually. Our local butcher has a large angus steer operation, and saves us lots of beef organs, hearts, tongues and large meaty knuckle bones that the dogs just love - they eat off the meat, cartilage, fat, and gnaw on the bones for days afterwards. He cuts so much, that he ends up sending most to the renderers if dog feeders don't buy it from him. Laurie

I feed whatever I can get my hands on, beef, venison, chicken/turkey necks backs wings, chicken quarters. Organ meat ie liver, kidney, heart, gizzards. If you have a supplier that is willing to order in for you at a reasonable price stick with them!

I try to feed as large a variety as possible. The bulk of their whole bone is chicken as I'm feeding a lot of dogs and it's the least expensive. So I make up for that with a huge variety in gound (bone in). I feed beef, lamb, tripe, turkey, herring, bison, buffalo, pork - pork hocks are a great one, but I only find them on sale periodically. I buy my ground prepackaged, and the brand I use has variety packs that come with a bunch of different ones, so every two days they get something new. Most of them have organ meat mixed in. I buy whatever cool things I find on sale as well. I also add yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs or molasses to their morning meal every day. I don't feed veggies unless something is turning in my fridge.

It's a local all-grass based farm. They don't do large production, but they have some nice variety of things - beef, veal, lamb, rabbits, pork, chickens, turkeys, and eggs. They cycle their production with the seasons, so you can only get certain things at certain times of year - that's why I want to give them a list of things that I'm interested in, so that when the right time comes for different things, they can let me know. I am hoping they will sell me some "scrap" type meats/bones, but I don't know what to ask for.

I just got a whole slew of chicken backs and necks from them - for a reasonable price. The place I usually get backs and necks from is over an hour from my house. This place is 3 minutes away!

Just an idear here, why not ask if they have any current raw diet buyers and if so what they buy? just a thought. i did this with my raw supplier <local butcher> several years ago &they told me exactly what others bought from them and what kind of quanity deals they could give me.

They don't. The idea of me feeding my dog this way was new to them. They were interested and receptive, but I was definitely the first person that had approached them about getting raw items for a dog!!

livers, kidneys, backs, necks, tripe (green only, it hasn't been bleached yet) gizzards, hearts, breasts, flank...what ever you can get. I have a friend who would even feed her dog cow testicles. I also feed fish. The only fish I avoid is wild-caught salmon, because of the risk of salmon flukes. Not sure exactly what it is, but the parasites leave eggs in the fish and make dogs sick. So I only feed farm raised.

At our butcher, we can order beef hearts for about 13 bucks for two. That lasts about 3 months if cut into portions. We can pretty much get anything from our butcher.

i think if i found a supplier like that i would grab anything and everything they offered that i could afford to buy!

with the exception of bare naked bones.

scrap/cheap items you may be able to ask them for from that range would be;

chicken backs

chicken wings (possibly)

turkey necks (a big favorite here)

turkey backs

breast of lamb

scrag end of lamb

pork neck

belly pork

any offal

sheep/pigs heads (dunno about the regs in the US though, i cant buy sheep's heads here  )

and anything nearing the end of its shelf life, better them sell it to you cheap than pay the bone man to take it away :D

it may also pay to ask them how much a whole pig or lamb might cost you.

then what you do is find a very large cool box type container, pack it a tightly as you possibly can, and ship the entire lot to me :D :D
