What kind of crate?

Recommended Posts

My 1 y.o BC is crated during the day. He has a large plastic type crate. I need to get an additional crate for when we are travelling. I'd like something that can fold up and be stored easily, like those metal ones...but I'm worried about the crate collapsing on him if he got excited and jumped around at all. He seems to be fairly calm in the crate, but once in awhile will sort of "dig" at the door. So I worry with the wire/metal crates that he could hurt himself.

Does anyone use them or have suggestions?

My crate is wire and does not fold...it is 11 pieces when torn apart. I do not like it for traveling and have opted to buy the Vari Kennel intermediate crates for my two dogs. They fit much better in the car as well. I have seen metal crates that are specifically designed for cars, vans, etc that fold nicely...might be something to check out. Just don't get the one that tears into numerous pieces like mine!!!

What painted_ponies said - Zeeke has a fold-down wire crate as well, and it's been very secure for him. We also have stuff piled on top of the crate... it isn't going anywhere. It snaps together very securely. He used to freak out in his crate the first year, never had a problem. I don't think I'd trust him in any other kind of crate.

As for it being portable, however.... it's VERY heavy and awkward. EVen though it does fold down, it's not something I would want to be lugging around. Granted his is the "huge" size, but still. Even Zoe's is heavy. For travelling I'd want something fabric or plastic.

Both my girls have the giant sized ones, too.

It's a load all right, but luckily I have a pick up so I can just slide it out of the bed and unfold it. Not too bad as long as I can drive to where I need to set up. Kind of awkward to heave in and out of motel rooms, though.

I just think of how much money I save in health club memberships - they charge good money to keep your upper arms worked like that! :D

Would you trust a fabric or soft side crate for traveling? I have canvas and mesh typed fold up crates for the boys when we visit my dad and they are super light and actually washable. But they are really not for airline travel and such. Here is an example:

Mine was from Wal-Mart, however they don't carry the bigger size anymore.
