INU
Forwarding message that I received from another list. Sent: Monday, February 26, 2007 10:14 AM Subject: warning snausages I just got home from the emergency vet. I gave my dogs each a "roverolis," a new Snausage treat. My dog Scooter's got stuck in his throat. He was trying to cough it back up, but couldn't. I picked him up and held him upside down, hoping gravity would help. I stuck my finger down his throat several times. I could feel it but couldn't get close enough to get under it. He starts vomiting. I hold him upside down so he doesn't aspirate on his vomit. He is still heaving trying to dislodge it, I'm hitting his back, holding him upside down, his tongue starts turning blue. I grab him off the counter, grab my purse, jump in my car and race to the vet. I called Donna on the way and asked her to call the emergency vet to let them know I was bringing in a choking dog. She actually went there and notified them. I get there, jump out of the car, run in, they grab him, the vet comes running in and says h is entire tongue is blue, we have to knock him out now so we can get it out. I said do whatever you need to do, I'll pay for it. The vet came in and told me that I was very very lucky. She said Scooter would have died. She said the only thing that kept him alive was that he was so calm during everything. She also said that he was the second dog that had come in recently that had had this treat get lodged in its throat/windpipe. She said Scooter was lucky, the other dog wasn't. Scooter is now in ICU, he's getting antibiotics intravenously, and has to spend the night there. Hopefully he can come home tomorrow. I almost lost him . . . . I rarely buy my dogs this type of treat. Please DON'T PURCHASE SNAUSAGES ROVEROLIS BECAUSE THERE IS TOO GREAT A RISK A RISK THAT THE TREAT [iT IS SHAPED LIKE A PILLOW] WILL GET LODGED IN A DOG'S THROAT/WINDPIPE AND THE DOG WILL DIE FROM LACK OF OXYGEN. Please feel free to widely cross post this warning so that other lives can be saved.
Kat's Dogs
Wow. That is scary. I always have (and always will) used small do treats that hopefully my girls can't choke on. This is the kind of stuff from Nightmares. Thanks for the post.
Dixie_Girl
I am wondering why anti-biotics for choking? And what dog would remain "calm" during all that?
Rebecca, Irena Farm
This sounds a lot like the Febreeze type rumor. "Please post widely" is not the responsible thing to do if this product really is this dangerous - no mention of contacting the company, FDA, etc? Why is this anonymous? Who is the vet? kelpiegirl
There are several treats out there that are dangerous. I don't mind hearing about this sort of thing, and don't really find it suspect- just a heads up. Fwiw, my Boxer would die if I gave him a pig's ear- he gets it all soft and then it get stuck in his soft palate. Not a pretty sight. Nothing wrong with any treat as long as you are careful when your dogs get them. Julie
road guy
those things always left such a nasty smell in our pantry, even when we put them in ziploc bags, so we stopped using em years ago.

painted_ponies
What is this? Here's a link: Febreeze Rumor This story circulated a few years ago, claiming pets had been poisoned by coming into contact with fabrics sprayed with Febreeze. INU
I wondered about the antibiotic part too... I removed part of the message as I don't know this person directly. Here's the whole message (removed the email addresses) Probably most SAR dogs are big enough to handle this little tidbit but thought it worthwhile sending. xxx -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Fwd: Warning on Snausages] Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 19:59:03 -0500 From: Reply-To: I looked this up and don't see that it's a hoax. Something else that can harm our dogs! xxx -------- Original Message -------- This came off the Illinois American Brittany Rescue chat ring. Just wanted to forward it to you as an FYI. sandra s.
I wondered about the antibiotic part too... I suppose he would have some abrasions if it was a hard treat (I don't know what they are), so they might have been worried about infections down there. GoldenCollie
A dog can choke on any treat, no matter what the size! Dogs have been known to choke on their dry food while eating dinner etc! We can't always wrap them up in cotton wool. This was a one off incident. It certainly won't put me off feeding my dogs large treats. If it did happen, its very sad and i sympathise for the owner having to go through it, it must have been worrying, but like i say, dogs can choke on anything - whether it be treats, toys or rubbish they pick up outside! smileyzookie
We bought Riven those but they were the fortune cookie type. They were about a half dollar size. She loved them, and did fine. I'll keep an eye on her though if we buy them again, just in case.
MaggieDog
I would never feed snausage treats, not due to choking but due to the insane amount of dyes and artificial preservatives they contain...
haleigh
Ehhhh...I either make my own treats or buy them. But no matter what dog treat I get I always break it into small pieces.
WyoBC
I would never feed snausage treats, not due to choking but due to the insane amount of dyes and artificial preservatives they contain... That's why when I looked at them a while ago I didn't buy any. I like to get different treats for Black Jack but I'm very careful to look at what they're made of and so on. I can't believe what some treats have in them! I saw this new kind of food that just came out, it had like 4 different kinds of corn in it. lrayburn
I'm not sure about the rest of the story but the antibiotic part is not a huge red flag. When Ben strangled himself in his crate, he was put on antibiotics as well - something about the stress of the accident causing little tears and bleeding in the intestines. Ben was without oxygen for over five minutes, but because of the type of accident (he was strangled by his collar) he didn't have any scratches or open wounds in the throat.
