SincereArtisan
I'm really kind of worried about this... Today I noticed a knot on the top of Rune's head. Its a bit smaller than a dime, swelled up about 1/2 inch or so, and purplish-red. Its not scabbed over, but it definately looks like it could be somethng infected. Its on the top of her head, right next to her ear. Any of you guys ever seen something like this?? I took some pictures...see what you think. It was dry when I found it, and it looks all 'juicy' now because we put some neosporin on it after cleaning it with some hydrogen peroxide. Tassie
Is it painful to touch? Me - I'd be off to the vet, just to be sure. (Just spent $44 yesterday to find that the weird lump on my old Kitty's cheek is probably not a worry - we'll watch and wait for a week or so, and get it off if it grows any more, or starts to worry her. She's 17, so GAs are an 'if necessary' proposition - otherwise we probably would have got it off sooner.) But, as I've said before, I am my vet's best friend. Or if I'm not, I should be. amc
If she were human, I'd say it's a pyogenic granuloma, essentially 'proud flesh' than can grow at the site of minor trauma. Maybe AK Dog Doc or someone with vet derm experience can comment as to whether dogs get pyogenic granulomas.
sweetbc87
When I was younger our boston terrier had the same thing on his hip, we had to have it surgically removed. I don't remember what it was exactly, but it wasn't life threatening. Hope you get some answeres.
Kat's Dogs
My first thought was a mini Hot Spot, but maybe that is just because that is what my little shih tzu girl gets...
juliepoudrier
Sometimes ticks will leave a spot like that too. If you're really worried, take her to the vet. Otherwise, just keep up with the neosporin and watch it for a few days. (Don't keep using peroxide as after the initial cleansing effects it can actually retard healing.) J. Beth G
Could it be a dog bite? Looks similiar to the one Pepper left on Popcorn's had when they were playing about a month ago.
WyoBC
Could she have ran into something? Since it was dry maybe it was healing up? It looks kind of like a stick or something caught her. Or maybe a bug bite, dog bite? I haven't really seen anything like that before. SincereArtisan
I'm reluctant to think 'bug/tick bite' just because they're on frontline, but its a possibility. Like I'd mentioned before, its not really coming to a white, pussy 'head,' but the head of it is purple/fleshy. Yes, it was drying up, and today it seems to be a bit better, so I think we're going to monitor it for a couple days and see what happens. If its still iffy by Thurs we'll go into the vet Fri morning. I've trimmed the hair around it to give it a chance to 'air out.'
kelpiegirl
It reminds me of a wart like growth, or a histiocytoma. bcnewe2
Reminds me of a tick bite that the tick fell off before you found it. Which would be understandable, as Frontline doesn't repell ticks, they bite and die quickly if they get on the dog, lessening the chance of spreading any diseases. My LGD's are on Frontline but I do a nightly tick check and find ticks on them that are dying. If I don't find any ticks I find spots like your pics that I assume are tick spots that I pulled off the day before or ones that fell off dead and left that sort of mark. I do notice as tick season is here, compared to last year we don't have as many. I think, if the feed source of the tick is not there they tend to move on to greener pastures. Or maybe we're frontline/tickpick killing the breeding population of ticks? Could be we didn't move here till Easter of last year so maybe this is just the start. sandyleew
My dog had something similar to that growing in her ear. I don't remember what it was technically called, but it was some kind of benign growth. The doctor removed it and biopsied.
