living with a ram

Does anyone have any advice for me regarding my new little ram? He's still a baby but hes past that darling cute stage. I just feed them and leave because I'm not sure how much handling is necessary. I'd like my sheep to stay a little wary of me and my dogs. Would it be better to have tamer sheep? My husband wants to make pets out of them with treats and cuddles.

As far as a ram goes, wary is better. The friendlier he is the greater risk of getting butted. We have a couple of friendly rams and a couple of wary ones and I definatly like the ones who move out of my way. The friendly ones are much more likely to try and push their way around with people - no fun when you are dealing with 250# of determined sheep.

I tend to make my ewes a bit more tame and they are usually pretty easy to handle, but the tame ones can be pests as well some times!

NO, NO, NO...do not make friends with the ram. If he gets friendly then he will not be afraid of you and when the ewes are in heat, a unafraid ram is very dangerous.

Do not pat him on the head as that will stimulate him to butt.

Make the ram very wary of you and have a dog with you at all times. People have been killed by rams.

I would suggest you join TheSheepGroup on Yahoo for more information on sheep. We recently traded for a flock of sheep (11 ewes and a ram) the ram had been a pet. I have since traded him off. However, I never entered his pasture without my border collie. It is suggested that when bottle feeding a ram you use a bucket w/niple. They need to be handled some, but never petted. A "pet" ram is a dangerous animal. Many a shepherd has learned this lesson the hard way. Just keep in mind the slogan for the truck: "Built RAM Tough!"
