FYI

Strong Leonid Meteor Shower Expected This Weekend

The annual Leonid meteor shower could produce a strong outburst this weekend for residents of the North America and Western Europe.

A brief surge of activity is expected begin around 11:45 p.m. ET Saturday, Nov. 18. In Europe, that corresponds to early Sunday morning, Nov. 19 at 4:45 GMT. The outburst could last up to two hours.

At the peak, people in these favorable locations could see up to 150 shooting stars per hour, or more than two per minute.

ps, Mark, looks like Sunline is closed  They aren't doing any warranty repairs per the letter from thier lawyer that has been posted on the net. Will have to keep my fingers crossed that I don't have any leaks or other issues. The appliances are covered under the manufacturer.

Mark,

I liked my old sunline that was 20 years old, that's why I bought another one. I liked the quality and the fact that the trailer held up for that many years.

I worry about the occasional issue that might crop up and especially if I should have any leaks or problems with wiring etc. The dealer is looking at an issue with a light switch for free.

I've had an ongoing issue with my water heater, but that is covered under Atwoods warranty, thank goodness.

On the topic of trailers, etc., I am looking at a 1984 Coleman pop-up. It is small, only popping up on one end and sleeping three (which is more than I need but will fit me and Ed and dogs and maybe an occasional child).

Anyone with experience with this sort of pop-up? I can't go see it until the week after Thanksgiving but it's very cheap, with only one small hole (that can be fixed, they say) in the otherwise good canvas. It has a working stove and sink and heater. Any opinions?

Any advice on what to look for when and if I go and see it? The "if" is only if it is too heavy for my car (waiting on that info) or if it sells before I can go.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Tom's.

Sue,

I think the biggest problem is water damage. check for water damage on the roof and floor and under the floor. If it has a hard top, does it go up and down and does the door close properly. If the door does not close correctly, most likely it is because of warping due to water damage.

Make sure you set it up and take it down, not just see it set up.

Do the zippers work? Check the canvas for rot.

Have them turn on the stove to check that it works. If the heater is supposed to work, have them turn that on also.

Have them hook the camper to thier car to make sure the lights work on it.

If it is really small it won't have brakes. If you can, check the wheel bearings.

Thanks, Nancy. I really appreciate that advice and will print it out if we are able to go and see it. The seller says it has brakes but hasn't replied yet to my question of whether they are electric or inertia (tongue) brakes. It may just be too big for my car - I'm waiting to hear back on that and a few other questions. The hole in the canvas is at a corner and that may be an issue if it's not easily repaired.

I used to be quite comfy camping out in my van (which had a "bed" back seat) at trials and such, but a close encounter with a deer at 70 mph totalled the van. It just isn't the same in a Subaru.

If it will be compatible with my car and is in reasonable condition, it would make trips to trials and clinics (and the beach) a lot more comfortable! It's also cheap enough ($600 obo) that my hubby is all for me getting it if it's in as nice condition as the seller says it is (canvas in great condition except that one hole, everything works, spare tires - but no heater).

Thank you!
