Rave
Broke her foot a week ago and still has 5 weeks of rest to go. Anyone want to come entertain a bored pup? Anyone have any experience rehabbing broken bones - will it take the entire 6 weeks to heal? Sorry for the size of the pics... I don't have photo editor anymore. Kat's Dogs
Awwwww - Poor poor pitiful Rave!! Well, at least the pictures are cute!! When Peanut was just a little pup she broke all her toes on one paw: One thing, make sure you handle and pet the broken paw - I didn't when Peanut's was in the cast and so she never got used to that paw being touched so she really doesn't like it handled. and yes, it does take awhile for them to heal fully - and it isn't possible to keep a pup calm (we just laughed when the vet said "keep her calm and don't let her do any running, jumping or heavy playing for a few months" ) Hopes for a full recovery! Good luck with having a crazy dog in the house! ETA: Those ears look exactly like Dazzle's!! Very cute!
Guest TheRuffMuttGang
Tally says she feels your pain, Rave. She broke the tip off of her radius 8 months ago. She broke the leg on February 15th, had surgery on March 8th to place a screw in the leg to hold the bone fragement in place. The splint was changed every 2 weeks until it was removed on May 2nd (photo below). From that point she had 2 more months of strict ex-pen rest and was allowed to go out in the yard to potty off leash but that was about it. She went to her first flyball practice ~5 weeks ago since breaking her leg. She is now doing full runs again but the leg gets sore and she'll limp on it from time to time still. You've only got 6 weeks. I had around 5 months of strict crate rest! You're lucky!! Keep an eye on the shaved area. Tally bloodied her shoulder with her back foot because it itched so badly. The entire shaved area peeled intensely (it was fun, like a sunburn!) around the top of the split and once the splint was removed, her entire leg was peely!! Her nails grew funny directions and were very long when the splint was removed. Be very careful as you reintroduce exercise. It's amazing how much muscle degeneration occurs in just 6 or 8 weeks. Tally's leg was literally skin and bone with ZERO muscle when the splint came off (2nd pic). Slowly she gained the muscle back and limped less and less each day. Brandon M
wow, 5 months of crate rest. must have been real hard. Sorry about rave I hope she heals up real well! poor girl.
Rave
well that 6 weeks was just for the splint, not including rehab after that, so I'm sure she'll be on a leash for a lot longer. She lucked out and didn't need a pin or surgery.
Guest TheRuffMuttGang
I still manipulate the joint where the surgery was. I flex it back and forth to pressure and hold it. It's still getting more flexible but she's definitely lost some range of motion. Where on the leg did Rave break her leg/foot?
Rave
she broke the 5th metacarpal, up where the ankle flexes. Vet said it was in a good spot since it only involved one bone. It's only been a week, and she's trying to run around like it's not broken at all. thanks for the tip about the nails. I noticed they were getting longer. I might lightly file them to keep them short.

Keegan's Mom
Look at those eyes - I know those eyes too well!!! I hope that Rave is back to her crazy self in no time. How did she break it? Was it a sport injury?
Guest TheRuffMuttGang
Wicked, Even though I felt bad about doing it, I found it easier on myself to keep her crated or in an ex-pen. I had 3 other dogs at the time and she always wanted to do whatever they were doing but she couldn't. She actually got terribly sick throughout the ordeal due to the stress of being crated but I'm happy to say she is healthy now.
trailrider
Bel broke 3foot bones on a front leg as a youngster when she went racing out playing. The vet put on a spoon shaped splint and I kept her from running for 3 weeks. She`s been fine since, and still runs and jumps fences to go to the sheep at 9 years of age. Rave
Ruff, I don't feel bad about doing it...lol. She's been crated/penned since it happened. She's adjusted well, as most dogs do. Crating for her isn't a big deal, as she's been used to that since I got her. Hey Rachel!! How's Tess doing? Got any pics? Rave was running full out and jumped a 3' concrete retaining wall, hitting a little low and smacking into it.

airbear
Awww, poor Rave. You better drive her up to Vancouver so she can be properly snuggled. How was Scottsdale? Were there really 900 dogs there???
Rave
Well we're heading up to Cloverdale in January! I might have to register Zoe for AAC since Rave's out of commission now. AZ was HOT! Yes, tons of dogs, just like last year.
Keegan's Mom
Hey Laura - it occurred to me that I lost track of this thread. Tess is doing well and I can't believe that they are 2 already!!!! Tess will always be a puppy to me, I think. We are FINALLY moving to Cary the weekend after Thanksgiving. How is Rave doing now that it has been a week or more?
Rave
oops! completely forgot her birthday yesterday! thanks for the reminder! she's been getting plenty of bones and attention anyway, so no biggie. She's a maniac of course... she tries to literally bounce off the walls in her little "corner". She's not letting her splint slow her down at all... even on a 4' leash she's still a nutcase. 2 weeks down...4 to go. sigh. I'm getting her spayed next monday, maybe that'll slow her down for a day... ha!
Kat's Dogs
Happy birthday Rave! Good luck keeping the maniac calm for a few more weeks!
