Hector
The term "woman's best friend" certainly applies here: Dog leads rescuers to stranded injured runner
KrisK
That's a great story! Taz sounds like a wonderful dog!
smileyzookie
aw! I want to know how the rescue people knew how to follow him... I think it was a big risk, that dog could have been just wandering around right? Or would most dogs have done the same? Either way thats a good story, brought tears to my eyes lol. Hector
I only know what is in the newspaper article. But my best *guess* is this: At the time the SAR people arrived, Taz was running around, probably barking, and trying to attract attention. SAR knew the dog's description so they immediately associated the dog with the missing woman. So SAR likely said something like "Taz, where's your mom? Go find her." So Taz understands and takes off running along the trail, and the SAR follow on the ATVs. Taz was smart enough to know that mom was in trouble and needed help and when the SAR told him to find mom then he knew exactly what to do. As I said that's just my best guess. Allie Oop
Hector, I though this was a great story, too. It got a lot of press here in SLC. I'm so glad it had a happy ending. It could have easily been very tragic, as that area is very remote. Here is a link to a picture and some video of the dog, Taz. Dog Credited With Saving Woman. Hector
Deb -- Thanks for that link. It was nice to see Taz together with Danelle. Since she had fallen 60 feet down from the trail, the SAR might not have found her without help from Taz. And she might have died from hypothermia if they hadn't found her when they did. That is a happy ending for sure.
diane allen
I heard second-hand that she's lost one or more toes, but otherwise is recovering well. Also, that searchers saw the dog's tracks to and from where Danielle was - back and forth, back and forth. Said the dog must have made a thousand trips! Allie Oop
I think that's probably right. Danielle said that Taz kept coming back to check on her and then would take off again. I've biked Amasa Back Trail myself and wouldn't want to be stranded out there (either in the winter or the summer)!
