Cold Comfort Farm Sheepdog Trial Results

21-22 Sep 02

Our Second CCF Trial went fairly well I think, thanks to the several friends who

volunteered their help in preparation and the excellent work of our setout crew,

pen workers, and judge. We were blessed by near perfect weather once again. In

spite of the summer's drought and brownish-green field we had enough rain the

day before the trial to at least settle the dust. Saturday was sunny, with high

in the mid-80's and a pleasant breeze. Sunday was cooler but still sunny, with

the same breeze.

Our judge was Alan MacDonald from Scotland. (A special thanks to Jack & Kathy Knox for making this possible. Alan will be judging the Midwest Regional Trial

next week.) There could be no complaints about his consistency or powers of

observation.

The number of entries was a little disappointing this year, but the pace was

relaxed and with the ideal weather, there were no worries about finishing during

daylight hours. Nursery class was cancelled due to lack of entries. There were

handlers present from eight states.

The sheep were mixed commercial whiteface, predominantly Cheviot crosses and

were light but manageable, set out in fours with two ewes and two spring lambs.

All of the first round open runs were with fresh sheep.

The field was rolling terrain with an occasional dip. There was a wooded gully

well to the left of the outrun area where sheep could be (and occasionally were)

lost. Open outrun was 350 yards with about a 400 yard total drive. Open-Ranch

was a 200 yard outrun with 100 yard single leg drive and return to pen.

There were paid dedicated setout workers, and setout pen duty was performed by a

local 4-H youth group in exchange for the lunch-stand concession.
