Amanda Lynn
I have a 2 yr old BC that I just adopted from a shelter, when I brought him home he was scratching like crazy which didnt suprise me most of the dogs at the shelter seemed to be digging at fleas so I gave him a dose of frontline which is what I have always used on my dogs with great success however it is a week in and he is still scratching and biting I cant seem to get rid of his fleas I have also sprayed all the soft surfaces in my house with a home flea killer so that they wouldnt just hop off him and into the rug then right back on him, Does anyone have another suggestion for flea control? Also he has a 2 patches of missing fur on both elbows that are scaly and he digs at them quite a bit, I have been using the hot spot medication I got from the vet but it seems to only provide him any relief for about 15 minutes. I have also been giving him some fish boddy oil capsules and a multivitamin since his coat is so dry but that doesnt seem to be helping alleviate the rough elbows. any suggestions? Guest amylobdell24
Is it Frontline PLUS? The PLUS version has an insect growth regulator in it that gives you control faster. Also, if your dog has very dry skin, Frontline doesn't seem to work as well as Advantage - Frontline uses the skin's own central oil to disperse over the whole coat (the reason why you are not supposed to bathe within 48 hours either side of application) so dry coats can't seem to disperse it as well, whereas Advantage uses hair movement to disperse. Downside is, Advantage has no IGR in it, so you get that re-emergence of hatching fleas about a week after application. They die, but it takes more time than Frontline Plus. Another option is Advantage or Frontline with Capstar (an oral pill that kills all adult fleas on the dog at that moment - no residual kill or egg & larvae control), but it still works really well to get all the little biting buggers while the topical has time to work. And make sure all the pets in your household are treated. Good Luck!!
