stockdogranch
Hi. I've got a friend with a BC just diagnosed with a fungal pneumonia. I did some reading on the net and found lots of info. Seems there are different strains in different locations--some in the humid areas, some in arid regions (no escape). It sounds quite serious. I'm just curious--has anyone dealt with this one? , Thanks, Anna
FlashMom
I have, and it was difficult. My rough collie had a fungal infection in her nasal passages which moved into fungal pneumonia. Hers was a strain that is normally found on the skin, and the vet wasn't sure how it came to be in her nasal passages. We treated her for the infection for two years. We'd think we had it under control, and it would return every time she got stressed. We tried various anti-fungal meds, which were quite expensive. They were actually human medications that were mixed for dogs at a special pharmacy. The last time the infection flared up it was just after her yearly shots, which I'm seriously re-thinking at this time. The shots ran her system down a bit, and she couldn't shake it. The vet and had I decided that the following year we would do her shots separately, rather than all at once, in several visits. Unfortunately, the infection moved into pneumonia, and we lost her, at the age of 9. I hope the vet is treating the pneumonia aggressively, and I'll say a prayer for the pup. Please tell your friend good luck from me and my guys - Flash (BC), Bear (GSD), and Spiker (Westie). Terry
stockdogranch
FlashMom, Thanks for the reply. Sounds like the pup (he's in another state) had a good day yesterday--eating pretty well, etc., and then today the temp is back up over 104 again. They've got him on anti-fungal meds, but it doesn't sound like there's been lots of noticeable response to the meds. They did a tracheal wash to determine which fungus, but I do not know which one it is. Will keep ya posted, A
FlashMom
Keeping our fingers and paws crossed for him. I wish someone had been able to give you another perspective, but maybe it's not that common. My dog was always a very nervous dog, and easily stressed, which I think contributed somewhat to her issues. Please let us know how he makes out. Liz P
Please tell your friend to not have her dog vaccinated while she is still infected, even if it takes years (and it can with a fungus) to clear up.
