PSmitty
Hey, Doc! I'm considering a rescue who has turned out to be HW+. He is going to begin treatment next week, and I understand all about that. My question is, what about long term ill effects from having heartworms? Do dogs treated successfully go on to lead totally normal lives? How about things like agility and flyball? The dog is young, somewhere around one year old, give or take a couple of months, and in good health otherwise. He's not showing any signs, like coughing, but the vet called him a "high positive". lovesbc's
We had a bc who was also hw+ and we took him to the vet for the HW treatment. What followed was one of the most horrible things ever!!! It was a one in a million chance, I guess, but he was fine when we picked him up the next day. A few hours later, he was paralyzed in his hind quarters from a reaction to the injection of meds. We nursed the poor thing for 3 weeks, until after no sign of improvement we had him pts because that is no quality of life for a border collie. I don't want to scare you, but all dogs do not respond positively to HW treatment.
