CaseyGirl
Does anyone know why my Casey (a rough-coat)would have a very full, think coat in summer and then blow her coat just as cold weather hits? She's got a beautiful coat and is healthy, but seems to have gotten off cycle somehow. I read somewhere else that most borders blow their coats in spring and fall, but this timing doesn't make sense to me. The poor dog was miserably hot all summer with a full, thick undercoat and now it's gone for fall/winter. If it makes a difference, she spends most days outside, but comes in and out and sleeps indoors.
Cheri McDonald
Kerri, how old is Casey and is she spayed? My Rob is a double coated rough and blows his coat spring and fall. Your weather may be cooler but Rob is just blowing his coat now. Not sure maybe someone will come and answer, could it hormonal or age? CaseyGirl
No, she's only five and in great health. It just seemed odd to me. In the past, I thought she had the full coat in winter and the heavy shed in the summer -- but maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. If yours is doing it now, too, I won't worry! Thanks! Cheri McDonald
Rob's about 6 or 7 we think so she sounds normal to me. I just attack him with the brush daily (like he real minds tehe) and vacuum alot.
muggs
Sounds normal to me too. Mine are also blowing coats right now (and also blow in the spring). My previous rough coat did this for his entire life, but the "timing" when he was in his teens became kind of screwy. I figured it was because of his age and being inside more. Unfortunately I have one that hides when he sees the brush come out.
CaseyGirl
Thank goodness Casey loves the brush. She's not overly fond of the undercoat rake, but sits still for it. I want to try the "furminator," which I read about one of the other boards. Has anyone used it? I'm also on a constant search for the world's best vacuum cleaner. Just keep reminding myself I'd rather have the dog hair than not have dogs!
bc friend
Sara blows her coat spring and fall. I have noticed that when she blows her coat in the fall, she gets a thicker undercoat than she carries in the summer. Maybe they have to get rid of the old hair to get a better winter coat - I don't know!
