sea4th
Has anyone ever experienced this with a dog? What can be expected? How serious is it?
Dal & Mad's Mom
Dally had the dog form when I took him in to be neutered. I wasnt aware of anything wrong it showed when he had diarrhea under the stress. I think he was on a 10 day course of antibiotics and was totally fine. My brother had a cat with it that was pretty sick for a few days. In humans it comes from antibiotics killing your good bacteria and then you get infected. There is a huge debate if it's strictly a contact germ too.
sea4th
Would you say anxiety might be a contributing factor in this condition?
urge to herd
Hi, Vicki, If you're referring to c. perfingens, (there's several clostridia bugs) then yes, anxiety/stress can be a related issue. Buzz got ill 4 or 5 times in about 6 months w/c. perfingens. Somewhere I've got a print out about it, will see if I can dig it up the next couple of days. What I remember is that some vet school somewhere did a study and what they came up with is that many dogs who have been diagnosed w/c. perfingens overgrowth had been kenneled, had a food change, or some other noteworthy stress in the week or so preceding the overgrowth. Dogs w/a tendency to overgrowth are helped by extra fiber, the addition of healthy bacteria to their diet, and as much as possible, lowered social/environmental stresses. It's all true for B. It took us those 4 or 5 episodes to diagnose B, and we finally put him on amoxicillin for 30 days. Then a couple years later, he started having repeated outbreaks. Now he gets generic flagyl 3x/week, and that really works well for us. If we're having an extra busy week for the dogs, or he's kenneled for a few days, he gets one every day. It will probably be Wed before I can look for that print out. You might try googling clostridium perfingens + dog and see what comes up. Hope this is helpful. sea4th
Thank you. Extremely helpful, Ruth & Sheryl. The dog I'm referring to is a border collie, a nice little girl, referred to by the owner as being an anxious dog. She is about 4 yrs. old. I joke with the owner that she is obsessve over the dog's stool, but the owner has tried a lot of different diets. Some work for a while, then the diarrhea is back. She finally took the dog to her vet for specifically this purpose and was told that the dog has clostridia, but she forgot to ask more about it. The dog is now on flagyl and the improvement was immediately noticable. Then the word "anxiety" came up and I was wondering if this would be a chronic condition. Is this like Crohn's disease, or IBS, I wonder? BTW, none of this dog's littermates have anything like this. So I think I have all the pieces of the puzzle. I'm just trying to put them together to get a picture.
