My Tibbie - the last of my Golden Girls - is 12 yrs. old and a smooth coat.

Last week, I noticed a swelling on her side behind the ribs, IOW, the soft area. It wasn't hard, but seemed to come up fast. There were no outward signs of a bite wounds and it didn't appear to be painful.

Yesterday, I took her into the vet who said it could be one of two things---an abcess or a hematoma. Absess was ruled out because it wasn't painful and Tib felt OK. She aspirated the lump and brown blood -- it looked like motor oil - gushed out. When she looked at it under a microscope, she said there were a few cells in there that would warrant putting Tib on a round of antibiotics for two weeks.

When she felt the lump area again, she could feel some hard tissue underneath---scar tissue possibly? Or a tumor?

If at the end of two weeks, the swelling isn't gone, Tib's going in for surgery. My vet couldn't provide any answers because she'd never seen anything like this.

About a year ago, Tib had some mammary tumors removed. I don't know if it's related. We won't know either until either she gets better after the antibiotics or goes in for surgery.

Yesterday, when I came home, the swelling was back, only firmer this time.

Anyone ever experience anything like this? I'd hate to put her through surgery again, but she is in good shape with a nice strong heart.

Thanks.

I don't know either but I sure hope she'll be ok. I know she's in good hands with you. I truly hope that the swelling goes down and she keeps you on your toes for a good long time yet!

Please keep us updated. You've been through so much. It can't be easy. Sending loving thoughts from my home to yours.
