Rhborder
Hi everyone, I've been here a few days and could use some advise. My little Noah puppy injured his right leg at around 4months, My friends told me to go with them to the Chiropracter in ohio, so I did. It turned out to be a sprained ligament and she told me to rest him, at first i didn't which has prolonged the prob. I finally did put him on complete crate rest and he quickly improved! I continue to take him to the Chiropractor and have been very pleased, but from where I didn't rest him in the first place, recovery has been very slow. I'm now allowed to walk him for a few min. every day to balance out his muscle mass(left leg has gotten stronger than the other), anyhow, onour way home last night form walking he was attacked and started limping again He seems better today, but i'm wondering if I should walk him or rest him more   A friend thought he should still be walked to strengthen it, but I don't want to make it worse-What do You all think?? bobh
Ryan, Is it a front leg or rear? Did this Chiropractor take X-ray. I f it was my dog i would have a X-ray done, OCD can show up in a 4 month old dog. How long has this Limping been going on . In MO Any limp that lasts longer than 24 hours should be seen by a vet. I might allso go to a orthopedic person. bobh
Rhborder
Hi Bobh, I have had a dog that had OCD, this act nothing like it. I did My research and He has all the symptoms of a 2nd degree sprain:unstable, leg rocking etc. She is a very knowledgeable Animal Chiropractor, she works with Horses and preformance dogs; it is his right front leg in the shoulder region, it has gotten better, when he first injured it I did not keep him quiet because I thought "he's a puppy and needs to play"- what dangerous reasoning that was!! bobh
Ryan , If you are happy with the diagnosis than so be it I would still like a X-ray of the shoulder!!Is the chiropractor also a vet? Lol With your Pup. How long has Noah been limping? Hope he gets well soon up hear in CT they have rehab places so the can swim . bobh
Rhborder
Boy, wish we had rehab centers! we just have a cold pond which he can't swim in because of temp. She is a vet, To be able to practice they have to go all the way through vet school first; I checked into it, she used to work for a vet but was getting bitten too much and decided to start her own business where she can work mainly with preformance dogs. When working with the vet shoe could not turn down any dogs, and it was becoming difficult to work with her hands that way, thank you Bobh
Allie Oop
Radiographs couldn't hurt. There are other conditions that puppies of that age can have besides OCD. My 8 mo. old (now 11 mos.) pup had a soft tissue injury in the right shoulder and we were on restricted activity. Allie's symptoms were also limp that would come and go. How long did you rest your pup from activity? I think that the recommended period for restricted activity is between 2 - 6 weeks with absolutely NO activity, potty on leash, etc. Once Allie's injury had some time to heal (several weeks), we were allowed to start walking for a block, then two blocks, etc. to build the muscles back up. Walking on a leash was the main plan, but I did a fair amount of muscle massage (which she LOVED) and really did help. We weren't allowed to do a full run or park play until after about 5-6 weeks had passed. I am still cautious and only let her run full-on for 30 minutes at a time, alternating with walking. Her limp is gone and her muscle tone is fabulous.
Rhborder
Hi Deb, That Sound a bit like noah, He is almost a year not and after several wks of crate rest we too were allowed to start walking, We worked our way up to going around the neighborhood a few times, doing quite nicely, then yesterday he got attacked on our way home,I really didn't start resting him till after Christmas which is why he isn't completly better yet, He is do to go back to the Chiropractor on the 30th, and, even though he was jumped on, I'm very hopefull
