Canine Concussions

Does anyone have any experience with canine concussions? Rave was thrown for a loop last night as an unstoppable force [Rave] hit an immovable object [bulldog]. She went completely nuerological on me, but had recovered by the time the ER vet looked at her. ER vet said this happens where they don't know which way is up one minute and are fine the next. Scary as hell.

Anyway, I know how crappy I felt when I got concussions (the initial ones and then the secondary ones - 2-3 months later). Was wondering what to expect in her recovery, if anyone else had gone through this.

Thanks,

Laura

OUCH! Good luck with her - Was it true concussion (pupils uneven, black out), or could it have been a neck/spinal injury? Personally, I'd give her some arnica for inflamation/bruising and if you have a good chiropractor/acupuncturist around, I would take her for an exam. She may have inflamation or have something compressed that they could help.

I've left messages with my chiro/acu. vet but as she's very popular, we may not get in for a couple weeks. [uPDATE - JUST GOT AN APPT FOR SATURDAY - PHEW!]

My first BC Casey had a head-on collision that ended up inducing Wobbler's (CVI) in her, so I am nervous about spinal problems.

Which end of the bulldog did she hit? I'm just idly curious since in my experience it makes a BIG difference with that particular bulldog!

Ben has given himself concussions twice. It took him about a week to get back to normal completely. He mostly would tire easily and the first couple of days he'd have little spells of uneasiness. The doctor also had us keep him on a bland diet of boiled hamburger and white rice for a couple of days.

Now you know Ben - he self-paces. So probably if it were Ann, say, I'd keep her pretty quiet. Running around won't delay recovery or anything, but there's the danger of re-injury because her reflexes won't be 100% for a few days.

The first time it happened, Ben was 100% (for Ben) by the end of the week. The second time, he came down with that crazy ehrlichia thingie so it's hard to tell whether he EVER fully recovered, but certainly he's fine now.

Oh, I forgot to add that Ben knocked himself completely out both times. He hit a post at full speed (yes, Ben HAS a full speed and it's pretty fast) both times - the first time he was going so fast he rammed a fence wire into his sinus cavity. Now THAT's scary!

Anyway, so that was probably a more serious concussion than what you describe with Rave, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Just an update on Rave and weird concussions in general... she's perfectly fine with no lasting effects in her spine - phew! It's totally bizzare how she went from showing almost every nuerological deficit to completely normal. Vet attributes it to being a young, flexible, resilient dog. I've run her pretty hard since then and she was A-OK!
