skybarker
I was unable to spay my dog at 6 months because they found she was anemic. She is now 8 months old and her bloodwork is back to normal, so she can be spayed. However, since she is so close to her first heat, I am wondering if I should just postpone this until after. I know this would slightly increase her risk for breast cancer but it's not good to spay her if she has started heat , either. Also, I know she still has somewhat small red blood cells (I don't think her vet knows why-she will recieve at least one more iron injection). So, I am thinking about waiting until after her firt heat. I have two questions. I have never had a dog go through heat: what is involved? My dog is mostally an inside dog. Also, what are the risks/rewards of not spaying before her first heat?
laurie etc
I've had bitches come into their first heat as early as 8 months (usually around 10 months), but also as late as 15 months. If you are worried about making it through her heat cycle safely, I'd go ahead and schedule the spay. You can always cancel it if she does come in heat. IMO, going through a heat cycle would not be the best for a dog with an anemia history. Maybe your vet would have more insite on this. Pipedream Farm
15 months has actually been the average for my girls. I agree with Laurie. In fact I've never had one come in season under a year old. Like Laurie said, you can always cancel and reschedule if it's a problem.
