Miztiki - prey model

Recommended Posts

I need an answer to a quick question. I decided to go ahead and feed Ben these ducks that he dispatched several weeks ago (we froze them whole undressed). His normal diet is a half can of green tripe in the AM and a half can of the tripe plus two pounds of rmbs. The tripe is mostly to hide his multitude of meds, so the First Duck Day we reduced the tripe to just enough to feed the meds and he just got his duck. He ate it all. It was probably a seven pound duck, very lean, feathers, head, and all. Talk about prey model - you kill it, you eat it! [rolling eyes]

Anyway, that worked well, so I decided I was going to alternate a duck with the two pounds of rmb until his weight was where I wanted it, then go to every few days while these last. If this went well, I was prepared to grow out young uns and learn to dispatch them myself. Yes I love that dog a LOT. You should have seen the big grin he wore all day Sunday after his duck brunch.

Today is Second Duck Day. Ben's not interested. Why? Is he not hungry? Seven pounds is a big meal but that's not dressed out. I can't believe he even ate the feet of the first one, yuck. Is it common with this approach to gorge and then fast? How would you feed those ducks?

I'd sign on to a prey model oriented list but I'm on our backup computer here - it's a 486 - veeeeery slow - I had to sign off all my current lists.

Thanks!

hi rebecca!

i'm not miztiki, but i may be able to help too!

tikki generally eats around 1lb per day, or more correctly 7 lb over a week. a gorge meal for tikki might be 3ish lbs. if he had eaten 7lb in 1 sitting even tikki, gut bucket extrodinare, would not be hungry the next day. possibly not even the day after that! way to go with your lad though, sound like he would do well on the old gorge and fast thing!

however i think you should in fact send all of those ducks to me for tikki, as i have only once in his 9 years found duck cheap enough to feed to the dog!

hope this helps

love

donna

Sorry, didn't even see this til just now.

I'm not clear on when he ate the whole duck - was that yesterday's Sunday? If so, then I wouldn't expect him to eat anything for a couple of days. 7 pounds is a VERY big meal! A good gorge meal is 10% of the dog's weight from what I read. After a day or two I would feed him a very light meal for another day or so. You want the dog to *consume* 2%-3% of his *ideal* body weight, averaged out over a period of time if you gorge and fast.

If it was a different Sunday then maybe he OD'd on duck, like we do on cheesecake sometimes, and just isn't interested right now.

Yeah, I would feed the whole thing just like you did. In fact, I plan to do that here when we get it set up. I wouldn't even bother freezing it unless I had extra that needed storing.

Donna is totally wrong. You should NOT send her the ducks. You should save them for me and Boy when we get there. Seriously though, I'd like to buy one off ya if you have a spare. Also, wouldn't mind trying your tripe out. Boy hasn't had any yet.

Hmm, I've got a sheep too - and will have another by the time Boyden gets here! Also venison by the bucketfulls. Maybe if I alternate that a bit with the duck Ben will get interested in the duck again - Duck OD indeed! We lost ten ducks all at once so they are all in the freezer now. I offered them for $10 each but shipping or gas to pick them up made them too expensive to make it worthwhile.

If Ben eats one duck a week we may still have one left if you visit this summer sometime!

I'm really amazed he ate it all - I guess it was the novelty.

We can get pet passports too. But you have to start like six months' in advance planning, kind of a pain. Better than quarantine, though!

Boy hasn't eaten sheep or deer yet. If you have enough to spare then I'd like to buy enough of those and a duck for while we're in NC and the trip back.

Not sure about the pet visa Donna. When I went to England they said my cats would have to be in quarantine, so I left them with my gramma. If you have a link for a pet visa then please email it to me. Then Boy and I could go visit you and everyone else over there. You don't have the skeeters and ticks and snakes and heat and humidity that we have either, so camping would be really easy!

Well, Ben finally ate the duck last night or early this morning. We left him in the kennel with it because I was alarmed at the prospect of ending up with ripe duck by today sometime.

I think I said Sunday was First Duck Day. I was confused - it was actually Saturday. So every three to four days is probably good for Ben, with his green tripe for his meds and maybe a little rmb in between.

He looks fantastic - there's a twinkle in his eye I haven't seen in a while and he's asking to play more. I'm sad for my ducks but glad they didn't die in vain. (c:

Don't know about you, but I enjoy feeding my dogs as much as they enjoy eating. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone, and it will be fun hiding Boy's food in an unfamiliar place.

If you got pictures then I'd love to see them.

I get to finally meet you, and see your neat old house. Yay! I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Miz,

My dogs are off their raw. I have been feeding them pork necks, chicken backs, and pigs feet. Since the heat has started they are definitely not interested. Honey walks away from the raw and Cocoa buries it in the yard. Both refused organ meat. They aren't sick as they will eat kibble or my food if offered. (Still have a partial bag). Any ideas? My garbage reeks from the rotting meat I have been tossing. I have been feeding raw about 2 months now. They were doing great on it. Seemed calmer.

I don't know Toni. I've only been feeding raw for about 3 months myself, but I feed raw only, not kibble or other stuff, so maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe they don't look at it as food but as a treat or toy? Maybe they are just full from the other stuff? They shouldn't get more than 10% consumable bone, so if they've had too many chicken backs they might be a bit constipated.

You could probably get answers from the raw list. That's where I learned pretty much everything I know about raw.

Let me know what you find out if you go there.

Miz I was thinking the same thing, too much bone, not enough meat with high water content and therefore, stopped pipes.

Also kibble expands in the stomach and takes much longer to digest and if mixed with RMB can cause tummy problems.

It's 100 degrees here and my kids are polishing off 7 lbs of whole fryer chicken.

Thanks for the input everyone. I didn't feed them this AM before I left. They looked stunned! Honey doesn't consider anything but kibble food. She looks at me like I am nuts when I hand a chicken back. I had been giving them a tiny handful of kibble in the AM and raw at night but I will stop that. More meat, what like a whole bird sans wings, ground meat? I'm game. They aren't bound up as I have been watching them carefully (I'm getting the "do you mind" looks)and they drink alot of water.

Give them the whole bird, wings and all. All parts of an animal contain nutrients that other parts don't. I believe feathers and fur can be considered fiber. I wouldn't recommend grinding meat of any kind. Allowing the dog to tear and chew food takes longer and gets the acid juices flowing, preparing the stomach for what's coming. It also cleans teeth and is more satisfying for the dog. I feed my two meat that is still frozen so it takes even longer.

Be sure to vary their diet with as many other sources of protein you can get your hands on so that they don't get nutrient deficient. And be sure to keep that link handy!
