KMK
I just put Loki on the Solid Gold Wolf cub food. Any experience with this particular food?
punkrockbc
I know people that have used it, and liked it.. my friend has her GSD on Solid Gold Wolf. Typically I don't like "large breed" or "small breed" formulas, but I've only heard good things about it I <3 Solid Gold! Gonzo is eating Hund-N-Flocken, but I'll be changing him to Canidae soon for *ahem* dieting reasons..
BigD
My two are on Hund-N-Flocken (Lamb and Rice) and have been since we got them (puppy was started on it at 8 weeks). We have nothing but good things to say about it. Not sure why you are using Wolf. Is your Borcer Collie mixed with some large breed? Border Collies are not "large breed" dogs and you may do a bit of harm on the joints, etc with the extra fat/protein found in those types of food. SoloRiver
Don't "large breed" foods usually have less fat/protein? I'm probably just misinformed. Solo and Fly are currently eating Solid Gold Mmillenia (beef and barley, in the shiny blue bag) and doing VERY well on it. It's the only food other than Natural Balance that Fly has normal poops on. And it's relatively low in calories so it suits Solo, who is what we call, ahem, an "easy keeper." I like to switch their foods occasionally but I think we've found another staple, I like how they look on it that much, and it's easier to find here in VA than the Natura foods like Innova, or the Wellness kibbles I was feeding before. 2 Devils
Melanie - I have been thinking of switching foods so I may try solid gold since you say your dogs are doing well on it. My poodle has allergies and it is hard to find something good. My acd has been itching a lot more and bc/mix is having some allergy problems. Would you recommend for food allergies, as a test? Now that you are in the area, let's get together. You should also join me July 2 for herding and you can laugh at me and Riot. Email me at foschar@yahoo.com Cheers
KMK
My vet recommended a large breed formula because he is mixed with husky, and it appears he is going to be a big boy. I was using Nutro large breed puppy but it gave him severe diarrhea. We have been using Solid Gold wolf cub for two weeks now. He is doing very well. His fluffy coat is getting more fluffy, and has taken on a sheen. His stools are normal also which is nice. He LOVES the flavor and devours the stuff. He was actually refusing to eat the nutro after a while.
sea4th
My dogs also did extremely well on Solid Gold Millenia when I had them on it. When I read the label of the "Wolf" formulas, I was put off by the extremely low fat percentage---8 per cent I think? I always look for higher fat content---although I don't remember what the fat content was in the Millenia formula. When Chicken Soup came out, I went to that. SoloRiver
Hmmm. I don't remember what the Mmillennia fat content is either. Solo's coat gets dull when he doesn't get enough fat (the Wellness chicken formula did that -- he used to eat Wellness lamb because the fat content was higher) and right now it looks great, so I guess it's high enough. Rebecca, Irena Farm
The particular amino acids or combinationthereof may also be making a difference in Solo's coat. You can get away with less fat in terms of coat health, if you hit on a protein source that suits an individual dog's skin/coat. Beef, bison, and venison are all great examples of this. Susan M. & Skipper, Annie and Ben
I've been feeding Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken for a while now (a few years) with good results. I do top it with something every day, though, like canned pumpkin, yogurt, and this morning, for example, some leftover salmon and yogurt too. Skip tends to get heavy so I feed him a little less, Annie tends to be a little too thin so she gets a larger portion. They have great coats and skin, plenty of muscle on their bodies, tons of energy, normal poops, and no allergies. Can?t ask for more than that, I guess! Originally, the manager of the store where I used to buy my dog food told me that Solid Gold?s ingredients were all human grade. That brings me to my question: Recently Solid Gold has been showing up in my local Pet-Co store. It used to be hard for retailers around here to keep it in stock. Now it?s quite easy. I have heard a rumor that the manufacturer is changing the formula in some way to meet the demand. This is a completely unsubstantiated rumor, nothing more, and I am just seeking information. Does anyone know if the quality of this dog food is changing, and if so in what way? Does anyone of the boards have any information about this? Thanks!
