Nathan&Norma
I have always wanted to know if a blue merle and a tricolour breed a tricolour? Also can a blue merle and a black&white breed a tricolour? -Nathan
Rave
The genes for Merling and tri-color are separate genes. here ya go, read up: http://www.mastamariner.com/border_collie_colours_page.html
Eileen Stein
A blue merle can BE a tricolour. The gene that causes tricolour markings is a separate gene from the merle gene. So a blue merle can show tan "points" on the face, legs and under the tail, just like a solid color dog, in addition to its merle coloration. But I assume when you write "blue merle" and "black&white" you're referring to dogs who do not show the tan tricolour markings. The tricolour pattern is recessive. Therefore, only if a dog gets the tricolour gene from both parents will it show the tricolour markings. But a dog without tricolour markings could still be carrying one copy of the tricolour gene, and you couldn't tell that from looking at the dog. So . . . A blue merle and a tricolour can breed a tricolour, if the blue merle happens to be carrying one copy of the tricolour gene. Otherwise not. A blue merle and a black&white can breed a tricolour, if each of them happens to be carrying one copy of the tricolour gene. Otherwise not. If both parents are tricolours, all their pups will be tricolours.
