kimkathan
I know each dog is different, but roughly how often do people's dogs come in heat? Also, has anyone used Cheque drops or Ovaban to postpone a heat cycle?

Debbie Crowder-BaaramuLuke
Funny, Beryl was in in August, and she's in now (not funny)...eight months here too. Lord help me through this.
juliepoudrier
Debbie, Look at it this way: it's better than every six months! (Kim, I do know people whose dogs are on a six-month schedule, so don't write that possibility off based on our small sample.) J.
kimkathan
this is only her third heat. Her first was 7 months/233 days. I'm looking to see how regular a young dog usually is, as I have a trial coming up, and will have to travel quite a distance to get there. If it's the 233 days, she's not due to come in till Jun 3rd ish, if it's 7 months, she'sdue to come in mid-May. Guess I should plan for the worst. juliepoudrier
Kim, Are you concerned that she won't be "fit" to trial while in heat? Bitches range all over the place as far as how they work when in heat. Mine actually seem to work *better* or at least no worse. So if that's your concern, think back on how she worked last time she was in heat. If you're just concerned about trialing a dog in heat, it's okay to do that, as long as you don't bring her in among all the other dogs under the handler's tent, for example. And if she's one that needs to watch a few runs, you can bring her out to do that too, as long as you keep her away from other dogs and let folks know she's in heat so they can keep an eye on their own dogs. Someone at a trial I went to had a bitch in heat wearing a bandana with a red-hot flame pattern on it--the owner's way of letting folks know about her dog's condition--kinda like putting a red ribbon on the tail of a horse that kicks.... kimkathan
Yes, my main concern was how much of an inconvience is it to trial a dog in heat, not for me so much, but as for other people. We're planning on traveling to North Carolina (around 950 miles) and staying there at the field. I like the bandanna idea. This would be her first trial, so, I'm not so sure as to how she'd react anyways. I was looking into Cheque drops or Ovaban to postpone her cycle til we got home, not knowing what the weather would be, I'm assuming rather hot, I hate to leave her in a crate for the entire weekend.
