Tehanu
Hi. I'm a newish member of the board. I'm looking for a puppy or young border collie to add to my household. I'm looking for an active companion dog, and one that could get along with another dog (likely another herding breed or mix) as I'd like to add a second dog eventually. I'm considering the option of buying a puppy from a reputable breeder of working stock Border Collies. However I don't have any contacts in the working or competitive BC world (previously I have had Shelties so I would be a first time BC owner). I'm in Ontario, but would travel (when possible given current circumstances) for an appropriate puppy from a reputable breeder who raises healthy working stock dogs, and who may have puppies or young dogs available to go to active companion homes from time to time. (If I find a dog, I'd also be seeking local obedience training / activity recommendations). Might anyone have breeder recommendations, or any search suggestions or leads? Many thanks. D'Elle
I would suggest that first you look into border collie rescue in your area, and within the area to which you feel comfortable traveling. Rescues often get in young dogs, under a year, and sometimes also have puppies. All of my dogs have been rescues, and all of my foster dogs (obviously), and some of them certainly acted as if they came from working dog origins. One of my own rescue dogs definitely came from working dogs, (I knew his history) and was only in rescue because.....get this......the people who bought him from the stock dog breeder had sheep. And when the dog kept wanting to go over the fence to get to the sheep, instead of training the dog on the sheep, they gave him up to rescue. He came to me at age two, turned out to be a fantastic dog and I miss him every day still, even though he died a few years ago now. Rescue dogs rock. Journey
You've got a lot to choose from in Canada! Elvin Kopp, Scott & Jenny Glenn, Fiona Robertson, Chis Jobe, Jamie Gardner..check out the USBCHA website or visit the CBCA, I am sure they can put you in contact with many reputable breeders of working dogs. Mark Billadeau
Another resource is the Ontario Border Collie Club
Tehanu
Thank you all for your responses. I have tried a number of those contacts, including the Ontario Border Collie Club, without success so far.
Journey
That's unfortunate..have you reached out to Elvin Kopp? My Canadian geography is lacking..but I think he may be on the west coast. Also, Alta Pete stockdogs, Jenny & Scott Glenn may be a good resource. I know Jaline Knoll is expecting a litter here in the next few weeks. You should be able to find her, and all of them, on FB. Journey
And if you still are having issues..look at getting a pup from Joyce H, 5H Farms, Alzada MT. Working dogs, reputable breeder, stands behind her dogs!

Although I am not ready yet, due to having an elder small dog who should have a peaceful life, I will be looking for a good border collie puppy at some point and will remember this as a possibility. Tehanu
Thanks very much all for the additional suggestions. I'm not on Facebook, but will try to find contact information for those individuals. I'm in southern Ontario, so unfortunately am a long distance from any western breeders. But if those contacts should have any suggestions or recommendations that would also be helpful.
amc
Amanda Milliken is in Kingston. She knows everyone, everywhere ;-) Her contact info should be on the CBCA (Canadian Border Collie Association) website. Good luck! Amy
Tehanu
Belated thank you for the additional suggestion. I will also try contacting Amanda Milliken to see if she may have recommendations (hopefully she is not overrun with inquiries). I will be resuming my search for a Border Collie companion shortly, hoping to find some appropriate leads. Thanks again all for your thoughts and assistance.
