Deafness in BCs

And in "white" breeds like russells there is little to no consensus regarding "degree of whiteness." There is some evidence to suggest that all white are more prone to deafness, but not a lot....

Would I be hopelessly damning myself to being ill-informed and/or behind the times if I brought up "the merle gene?" I thought some genetic problems were linked to this poorly named condition. My understanding is that some but not all merle dogs carry a genetic trait that causes deafness (and other problems as well?). The problem with white or mostly white dogs is that it is impossible to know if they carry a merle gene? Sheesh, can I possibly be right about that. Sounds weird even to me...

Margaret,

"Denise, by "degenerative deafness" what do you mean? Chronic, undetected ear infections?"

While acquired causes certainly cause deafness, I meant Burns and Fraser reported it as a heritable disease.

There seems to be a lot of controversy about this in many breeds, especially dalmations.
