Alternatively we keep our dogs on preventative year round (eliminating the annual test) and use Ivomec sheep drench (which we already have for the sheep) which runs about $0.04 per dog per dose.

And the normal dosage for heartworms isn't high enough to trigger problems in most dogs with the mdr1 gene, which few Border Collies have.

Here is Australia our vets actually promote yearly vaccinations as well to keep the profits high, even tho the rest of the western world only vaccinate every 3 years.

 

I learned recently that I can vaccinate my cat myself, so every bit helps.

 

I guess I was more interested to learn about the cycle of the heart worm more than running out to get 2 x blood tests per year. Which does sound expensive even here in Oz.

No need to fantasize that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

 

There are a lot of vets in the US who push annual revaccinations even though their professional groups advise 3 years (and even that isn't science based but a compromise because their members were too worried about losing business from people who wouldn't bring their pets in for wellness exams if they didn't believe they needed shots).

Wow I guess I had hoped that the US vets would all do the right thing by their customers.

I guess this proves greed truely is international.
