Please let me know if this link did not work.
Mark Billadeau
Quite an interesting sales pitch from the source of the touted heartworm DNA test http://www.healthgene.com/promotions/heartworm_testing/ Profitability: Customers are willing to pay more for advanced technology. If you so choose, you can charge a higher than usual rate for a stylish DNA heartworm test, especially outside of the Heartworm Season. This will create a higher than usual profit margin. On the other hand, the savings you receive from our seasonal promotion can be passed on to the client and used to generate extra volume. Alternatively we keep our dogs on preventative year round (eliminating the annual test) and use Ivomec sheep drench (which we already have for the sheep) which runs about $0.04 per dog per dose. Gideon's girl
And the normal dosage for heartworms isn't high enough to trigger problems in most dogs with the mdr1 gene, which few Border Collies have.
Elwood
That makes sense Mark, thank you.! Here is Australia our vets actually promote yearly vaccinations as well to keep the profits high, even tho the rest of the western world only vaccinate every 3 years. I learned recently that I can vaccinate my cat myself, so every bit helps. I guess I was more interested to learn about the cycle of the heart worm more than running out to get 2 x blood tests per year. Which does sound expensive even here in Oz. GentleLake
Here is Australia our vets actually promote yearly vaccinations as well to keep the profits high, even tho the rest of the western world only vaccinate every 3 years. No need to fantasize that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. There are a lot of vets in the US who push annual revaccinations even though their professional groups advise 3 years (and even that isn't science based but a compromise because their members were too worried about losing business from people who wouldn't bring their pets in for wellness exams if they didn't believe they needed shots). Elwood
Wow I guess I had hoped that the US vets would all do the right thing by their customers. I guess this proves greed truely is international.
