Paw Chewing - NEED HELP

Recommended Posts

The paws have fur! Now that we've gotten some cold weather, she seems to be improving considerably. The feet still look a little gremlin-like but she's stopped licking them as far as I can tell!

There's fur growing back, the skin is a normal color, and all of the sore spots are scabbed over! While I was hunting for that sulfodene stuff Ooky suggested, I came across a different type of healing/antibacterial spray (they didn't have the yellow stinky stuff anywhere I looked) which doesn't smell like anything and says on the package that it doesn't sting, and Cal did really well with it. She let me put it on her feet and then didn't chew/sniff/lick. I guess she didn't even notice it, so there was no need to lick it off! And it seems to have helped enough that they're healing well on their own.

So long, Naked Gremlin Feet! Now to decide when we want to go see the doggie dermatologist to get allergy testing done. Expensive little beast...good thing she's so dang cute and sweet!

Classic sign of seasonal allergies. Now it's a matter of managing them.

Be sure to talk to your vet about alternatives to steroids and Benadryl. I know they're using second generation antihistamines like Claratin for dogs, and the generic's pretty cheap and I'm told it works better than Benadryl. Also Zyrtec https://www.vetinfo.com/cetirizine-hydrochloride-for-dogs.html.

There may be some of the other 2nd gen antihistamines might also be being used for dogs, but I'm not sure about them. The thing is that just like people, some will work for an individual dog better than others, so if you can find out what kinds are being used and try to get some samples it'll give you a starting point.

At least it's not something that lasts all year long. Thank dog for small things. ;)

@Root Beer - Thank you :)

@borasaurus - I'll check when I get home and let you know, don't recall off the top of my head. The girl at PetPeople recommended it after she told me her life story and how her dog is "totally 1/285th Border Collie and they're an AMAZING breed" (I agreed, obviously). She was right, it worked!

@GentleLake - Yeah, I'll have to discuss next year's allergies ahead of time with the vet because she's still really resistant to using anything other than Benydryl (which Cal did get accustomed to and now we give her 1/2 tablet and she does not get groggy and crabby like she used to). I am hoping we can move the allergy issues over to the pooch allergy specialist and continue going to our regular vet for normal things because I do trust her judgement and think she takes excellent care of Cal on top of always being willing to continue working on a solution to Cal's ailment whatever it may be...It was just this one situation where I wasn't thrilled with her response (asked for advice on switching to a diff antihistamine and was met with resistance). Coincidentally, I rotate antihistamines every year because otherwise I develop an immunity (is that the right word?) to each if I take it all throughout allergy season. Perhaps I should just find the list of ones that are safe for dogs and give Cal whatever I'm taking next year... :blink:
