aschlemm
I have an odd question. My female Border loves to "mark" off the property. She pees tiny amounts. My male almost always pees where she pees. I always thought it was him trying to erase her scent from the planet and establish himself as alpha (which he really isn't.) But a friend of mine says he does it because he likes her and wants other dogs to know that she is his bitch. Any thoughts?
GentleLake
I think both of those explanations are hooey. Dogs just like to leave pee-mail, their equivalent of graffiti saying "[insert name] was here." Of course, their graffiti has a whole lot more information in it that that. More like a newspaper. juliepoudrier
I often see one dog mark over another. I always assumed that the most dominant dog was going to be sure to leave the "freshest" calling card. I don't buy the male dog saying "this bitch is mine" because in my house the dominant bitches mark after/over males and other females. J. highway61
I have two males that do this also. But its almost always the younger, less dominant dog that pees over the older, more dominant dog. The older dog squats half the time and the younger dog will hike his leg right up next to him if I let him. I've also seen the older dog drink from a public water dish and then pull up and pee in it when he's finished drinking from the same dish! I've stopped trying to understand these odd habits and just prevent them now I know what to look for.

juliepoudrier
Well, there you go. I guess none of us really knows why one dog pees over top of the other's mark. Probably just "I got here last so here goes".... J.
aschlemm
What a variety of replies!! I do think it is funny since the female leaves a "trail of wee" and the male dog will run as fast as he can to try to mark over top of it!!! Sometimes shoving her out of the way in his hurry! They are both fixed and the male is a wimp. Guess only they know why they do it!!
