brookitar
So we took Loki our new puppy (13 weeks old) to my mom's and he met her four dogs for the first time. All was going well they were all playing and getting a long. Effie our other border collie (10 months old) out of the blue tries to shove and get in between the other dogs and Loki while they are playing. When that didn't work she tried grabbing Loki by the back of the leg and dragged him away. Well...Effie got a nice time out after that. Completely unusual behavior especially since she's never had a very strong herding instinct. Does this mean I should start separating the two during play time? Effie was in obvious distress and her behavior was also not acceptable. Eventually we got her to play at a distance with the occasional glares back at Loki. SS Cressa
Idk how old or rambunctious your mom's dogs are. Ik when my new dog starts getting overwhelm my boy will step in between my new dog and whatever is triggering the response. I have had other dog who wanted to be the fun police and would attempt to break up "out of control" play or play they consider "out of control". brookitar
They actually aren't that hyper she has those stumpy English Bulldogs and a couple of older boxers. Yeah we have been calling Effie the "fun police ". She doesn't seem to understand normal dog play for some reason. When I've taken her to the dog park in the past she acts really awkward when other dogs want to play with her or she will break up their play. Only game she seems to really enjoy is chasing. Luckily the puppy plays really well with other dogs for the most part. I'm hoping we only have one fun police to worry about lol!
mbc1963
My old boy used to do that; I had to give up on allowing play with any more than one dog at a time. He simply couldn't see it as anything other than a "rumble" that needed to be stopped QUICKLY! Turrid Rugaas has a good video of BCs breaking up te play of other dogs. diane allen
I don't have much experience with this, but have read/heard that border collies often have "different" reactions to those smushed-in faced dogs, like bulldogs and boxers. Apparently, their body language is different and our BCs have difficulty reading it. She may be fun police in any case. diane
brookitar
Yes I have noticed this as well even with other dogs and boxers/bulldogs. I grew up with the two boxers and for some reason pit bulls really hated them! I think it must have been the face or how their posture is. Luckily Effie greets all the boxers and bulldogs at the park I'm assuming because they look familiar. She was exposed to them as a puppy so she doesn't take offence to their body language. Effie is just turning into the fun police even though she is still a puppy herself!!
CptJack
I have a boston. A lot of dogs hate her. They're hard for other dogs to read, but on top of that their playstyle is really very forward, physical, and rude. Molly adores our Boston, but Molly grew up with her. brookitar
I had a Boston growing up once. And yes they do play very different. They are very straight forward and like to use their paws! They make great playmates. I do have to say though some of those smushed-faced dogs are really stubborn...especially English Bulldogs!
