2 Devils
I need help. I got a puppy a week ago (a bc/mix). He is 9 weeks old. I also had his brother the first week. Riot is a good boy and very smart. The problem is now that his brother is gone Riot cries and whines all night long in the crate. We hvae tried covering the crate, banging on the crate, banging other loud things, squirt gun/bottle, yelling, etc... He will whine for a few minutes when we put him during the day when we are home but will settle when you tell him no. At night is a whole other ball game. Anyone have ideas? Shawna
You could try a hot water bottle and/or a clock that ticks, both wrapped in towels of course. These have been known to help some puppies adjust. I had one particularly whiny puppy that wouldn't be quiet at night. I kept the crate right beside the bed and hooked my fingers on the crate door until she'd relax. It didn't take too many nights before all she needed was for me to let her smell my hand through the wire to let her know she wasn't alone. 2 Devils
I am also sleeping with my fingers in the crate door. At this point I don't think he cares. I just think he wants to be with us and not in the crate. It is a bad habit that I don't want him to get used to. I will see about the hot water bottle or clock. laurie etc
He's gotta learn - if having him close at night doesn't quiet him, I'd put him back where you normally crate him, turn a radio on for him (also to drown out his whining), make sure he has pottied for the night, give him a good knuckle bone to chew and go to bed. He'll stop whining eventually when he figures out it's not accomplishing anything.... He may get you up early to go potty though...
2 Devils
The other night he whined/cried from 10pm until 3:30am without stopping. He does not give up. He is a stubborn pup. We started allowing himto fall asleep with us then we move him to the crate. He will sleep for about 4 hours now then needs to go out. Hey 4 hours is 4 hours, no complaints here even though I know he can hold it longer.
laurie etc
yep - four hours is better than nothing! I would also really try to tire him out with alot of play (ball chasing, tugging, running laps around the kitchen - whatever) before you want him to go to bed - I also remove access to water from about 8pm until morning. Sue R
One thing that helped with my pup, who was tethered next to the bed at night rather than crated, was that I took my sweatshirt or tee-shirt off at bedtime, and put it on his bed. He would plop right down on that warm, smelled-just-like-Mom, shirt and sleep soundly until potty time. When I got back in bed then, if he was restless, I left a foot hanging out of the bed onto his bed. He'd curl up and be asleep in a minute, and I would bring my foot back to sleep with me!
