Jdickson321
Hey! I recently adopted a pup and was told he is border collie with a tiny bit of heeler. He's growing and not what I consider a typical border collie. I know the look ranges from far and wide but I'm just not certain. Currently at 4 months he weighs 30 lbs. What do you all think? rlwzgd
I think a picture would be incredibly helpful...
Jdickson321
Lol I'm trying I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Maybe it's not compatible with iPhones yet lol
Gideon's girl
Yep, that looks like a Border Collie to me. Nevermind, it was rlwzgd's avatar.
rlwzgd
Wait, you think Gret is a collie? Â Stepping off my smart a* stool (which I've been sitting on all morning)... To upload a picture, you need to use the advanced editor, so I have to switch off of mobile view into the complete html view, upload the picture and then switch back... On Android, the toggle is at the bottom - not sure where it would be for iOS.
Jdickson321
Finally figured it out. It's my first time here. Here is some pics!
MrSnappy
Well, he might weigh 30lbs at 4 months because he's fat. If he's actually not fat, then he's awfully round looking for a border collie. Cattle Dogs are pretty stocky though, so he could be a blend of the two. He looks border collie-ish to me. Jdickson321
Yeah he is currently on a ton of drugs after he took a reaction to his vaccines and is diagnosed with immune mediated thrombocytopenia. One of the drugs being a steroid so I'm sure it doesn't help. However he was stocky from the very beginning. Everyone keeps telling me there is no border collie in him at all because of his size, color, face, hair. Even though I know they come all shapes and colors I started to second guess myself :/
rlwzgd
The tail is cute! I love the black guard hairs coming in... Gives him an interesting look. Â I second the roundness - roll-y poll-y puppy is usually overweight puppy.
Jdickson321
Yes his tail is my favorite! I'm very anxious to see what he will look like full grown!
Jdickson321
I feed him 2 cups/day. Although the prednisone makes him eat like crazy, so his bowls instantly gone each feeding and sometimes I cave and give him 3 cups/day. But I've heard a side effect of prednisone or Atopica (his other medication) is bloating so until he's done all his meds in a couple months it's going to be really hard to say. Gideon's girl
Wait, you think Gret is a collie? Well, it couldn't have been my avatar. Everyone knows BCs don't come in red and white, and the ears are all wrong.
bcnewe2
So besides the chub I see cattle dog body and in the ticking. But he could have some border collie thrown in there. And yes the meds he's on would have him ravenous. I'd stick to the 2 cups or a bit less and find a low calorie snack that he likes. Carrots, apples, frozen green beans. I even use ice cubes as a treat cause my young dog loves them so much. I can only wish someone would do that for me! I'd look as good as my dogs! He's a cutie whatever he is. Gideon's girl
He looks like he could be part BC. The other part could be lots of things, like GSD. Don't feed that third cup of food, that's a huge amount to add at one time to his normal diet. Instead, try holding back a handful of his normal meals and using that for training treats. That makes his food intake last longer and helps to keep his mind busy too.
Maralynn
Hi and welcome! Â RE:ravenous dog. if you have a yard, take his allotment of kibble and throw it in the grass. It will take him longer to eat and searching for it will help occupy his brain

Here the alternative is to throw the kibble down on the floor in the house. You can also drill a kibble sized hole ina soda bottle lid and put meals in the bottle for him to work out. maggiesmommy
I see Australian cattle dog (definitely), border collie (likely), and GSD (possibly). We could do it the old-fashioned way and just refer to breeds by their type-- this is definitely a shepherd-type dog. Â What's his behavior like? He's a total cutie-pie! Jdickson321
I'm not sure what a GSD is. German Shepard? Â He is definitely herding as he nips our heels constantly lol trying to get him out of the habit. He's incredibly smart. He does do a lot of staring also. Â But its so hard to tell as we had only had him 2 weeks when he got very very sick and needed blood transfusions etc and now is on so many meds that I'm sure they would affect his temperament right now. Right when we first got him everyone said he wasn't a typical puppy or any they'd ever seen as he was quite shy and not very active but it could have been his sickness setting in. maggiesmommy
Yeah, GSD is German Shepherd. He's definitely a herding mix.
