Tommy Coyote
I have a question about commercial food. If the manufacturer states on the package that you should be feeding your puppy 2-1/2 cups per day for a 20 pound 3 month old puppy does that mean that in order for the puppy to get all the nutrients it needs from the food it will need to eat the whole 2-1/2 cups? Am I making sense? We were discussing number of calories perday on another thread. I understand that you should tailor the amount of food to the dog and it's activity and it's healthy weight. But if you feed say half what the package calls for will the dog get all the nutrients it needs?
Liz P
That is certainly a concern if you are only feeding a fraction of the recommended amount. It's why I mentioned the potential need for supplements on the other thread. You need to be very, very cautious though with supplements in pups. Too much calcium can spell disaster. If you are feeding RedPaw, I never had a problem feeding less than the bag recommended to a pup. You can actually look up the recommended level of nutrients for pups and do some math to see if your pup is getting enough from the food. Tommy Coyote
I'm feeding Fromm Puppy Chow - Fromm also makes Red Paw. I think it's 417 calories a cup. The regular Fromm Gold the big dogs get is 407, I think. Actually, Jonah is eating just about the recommended amount and is staying a very good lean weight. And I give him some good, human grade canned food as a topper. He really gets a lot of exercise every day. He and Tommy play for hours. I was just thinking about my customer who feeds her dog 1 cup a day. I would worry about that. Especially since she is feeding a probably not very good kibble. I was just wondering. Liz P
She could use a balanced multivitamin for adult dogs.
Gideon's girl
If you are within 20% of the recommended amount then there is absolutely no worries, but the further away from that you get the more need there is to consider supplementation. Kian's Mom
Ok guys I've been following these food topics and u mention Human Grade Canned Food. What is that?
Sue R
Canned food made from human-grade (approved for human consumption) ingredients, I'm assuming is what is meant.
Tommy Coyote
Yea. I buy Dave's dog food for the dogs. It's made from all different kinds of protein - pork, beef, chicken, duck, turkey and most of it also has some veggies in it. I will have to look, but I think it's grain free. Boy, my dogs love it and it spices up their dry food. It costs about $1.50 a can - some types are a little more than that - and I use about 1 can a day between the 3 dogs. It smells so good that I was thinking you could just dump it in a pan and warm it up and eat it. Some of the premium canned foods can cost $3.00 a can. I can't afford that.
