supplements for arthritis?

Recommended Posts

Thank you Gideon's Girl. Hopefully with the thyroid meds and the new stuff for the joints, he can get some movement back. Even a slight improvement would be good. If not, I will insist on some xrays, and go from there.

I just know in my heart that he has a couple good years left in him. I've known with all our other dogs 'when it was time' and I just don't think he's there yet.

Can't you just tell your vet that you want x-rays done? I would want to know exactly what I was dealing with. I don't like just guessing at symptoms if they are serious.

Is there an ortho specialist you could go see? That is what I would do if I didn't really feel right about what my vet was telling me. I would get a second opinion and see what drugs are available that might help in this situation.

I doubt that I would have surgery done on an old dog unless the surgery was something that was really going to help. But that is just my own opinion. Most of my border collies have only lived to be 13 or 14. But that is a really personal situation and there are times it might be well worth it and other times not.

Thank you GG and TC!

There is not an ortho specialist near us, and he can't take a long car ride anymore. My vet just keeps saying that xrays won't help any.

I have had a good recommendation for another vet in our area. I've already made an appointment for an eval, as he also has seveal lumps that we are told are 'normal'. But I want a second opinion on those as well.

I realize he's old for a BC and that we've never had one before, so I just want to make sure he's not in any pain - want him to be as comfortable as possible. Like I mentioned - he still has that 'spark' in his eyes and I can tell that he would run and play if his body would let him. Never had a dog as special and awesome as Martin, and we've had plenty of dogs over the years [maybe it's because we've mostly had cocker spaniels and those are pretty low on the intelligence scale ;) ].
