People Freindliness and puppy-adult weight

How friendly is your BC to new people?

Talon is my first BC, I've wanted one for years and from my research they seem to range, with most ignorenig people for the most part. I can't seem to think of the correct wording sorry.

Talon was weary of people to begin with. We worked during our puppy socialization classes and outside of those classes with LAT and having people reward him with hot dogs (much better than the usual kibble he gets lol). Or if the person, or I, didn't want to give him the hot dog (they are greasy) I taught him "go say hi" where he would touch their hand and come back to get a treat. It seemed to work really well. He'd let some people cuddle him and enjoyed people's attention, mostly from women and some men. Otherwise he would ignore them.

he was doing great, one day woke up and suddenly loved everyone. Now he is suddenly regressed back to being weary of people. Though a few days ago we took a trip to the pet store and he was great. Today he is back to being fearful, and woofing at some people. We are back to LAT from a distance and saying hi to a few select people he is comfortable going up to. There really isn't a lot of people here, we see maybe 3 or four people a day, which I think is part of the problem. It's a very slow town. He is going back to pup socialization classes, as I can do obedience at home, I'm more worreid about socialization.

Another fear period maybe? Or possibly stress from the move (moved 3 weeks ago from a city to small town)? How is your BC with people? How where they as puppies?

My other dog is reactive to new people so I'm worried about having 2 reactive dogs. They are never walked together. I really don't need, nor want, him to be super lovey. I want him to be attentive and be comfortable around people. Basically I want to work to the goal of him being tolerant. :)

Sorry this is long, last question. Weight wise he seems very small for a BC. He is 18 lbs at 17 weeks I believe. Do you guys remember your dogs puppy to adult weights? How long did it take for them to get to their full weight and how much were they at 1 yr old?

Thanks! OH, and I'll post some pics of Talon for you guys :)

My pup is only a couple weeks older then yours, just 19 weeks old in fact. We have yet to come across someone that he has been afraid of. I think his personal view is a stranger is just a friend he has not met yet. I live in a smallish city so I do take him with me often to the hardware stores around me. He loves to go to the feed and tack store as well.

As for weight, Sage was 36 pounds at his last vet appointment. That was at 18 weeks. I am not sure how big he will get but I am hoping it isn't more then about 60 pounds when he is an adult. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Oh and he is adorable by the way! Talon has such a cute face.

I think it's just a stage. My Gael went back and forth before she settled into the happy goof she is today. Talon's sister, Lil, is still with Paula and right now she's in a phase where she's suspicious of things. If Paula or I try to catch her, she's pretty sure that might not be in her best interests - even though she may just be gonna get a belly rub or a cookie! ;)

I'd say just let him take his time and don't make a big deal about whatever phases he goes through. With Gael, I just handled her moods accordingly and didn't let her know I was reacting to her in any particular way. Keep doing what you're doing, and be patient. Patience is the key, particularly with too-smart BCs. :)

Looking forward to seeing new pics of the boy!

Gideon thinks everyone was put on earth to love on him. When we are driving somewhere, if he sees a pedestrian, he gets very excited when they are still a long way off, because he is sure they are coming to pet him. Micah thinks Gideon is nuts, those are strangers and who knows what they will do, they might be OK, but then again they might not.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for all the replies, sorry about the long delay. I don't have internet at home so I have to go to the library.

Anwyas, Talon is doing SOOO much better! ^_^ You guys where right, it was a phase. He loves everyone he see's now pretty much. There are only a few and far between guys that he is a bit shy of, but no barking. :) He's even gotten into the "I love you and am going to climb up your head" phase so he can get closer to them haha :P We are working on it ;)

Now if only he didn't want to "herd" the other puppies in puppy class.

Mur also thinks that all people are his BFF's. Heaven forbid I make the mistake to take him on a walk when the high school/elementary school down the street lets out. We have been known to stand at the end of the driveway for 30 minutes so that ever kid walking home can pet him. If one of the kids is shy about petting him, Mur will have a bout of the "crazies" and be beside himself until the next kid arrives. We had issues with other dogs (he was an only puppy) but socialization, obedience and ton of trips to the dog park have seemed to resolve that issue. The barking and lunging at the leash really tried my patience! Thank goodness for the halte!

Sizewise - Mur was 7 lbs. when we got him at 8 weeks and now at 7 months he's 43 lbs. but lean. I tell him every day he can stop growing and that he's big enough. I too am hoping for UNDER 60 lbs. but I think I will just have to wait and see. He is a mix after all (BC and Auzzi Shep).

Glad to hear he's turned a corner! :) I thought he might come around, with time. Sometimes these dogs can be a bit wary of people with a look or body type or clothing they find "off," but that's not unusual. They just over-think things, lol!

I forget which bitch was Talon's mama, but your breeder has one of the Nan pups who is rather reserved and thoughtful but very sweet, and one of the Lasca pups that is as bold, outgoing and friendly as they come. Another friend has one of the Nan puppies and that little girl is also bold as brass and loves everybody. So, the pups I'm still in touch with are all pretty nice, solid little rascals! :)

I know someone before mentioned a way to estimate how big your pup will be as an adult. What was it again?

My boy at 15 weeks was 21.9 lbs. >.< I expect him to be big just wondering... :) sorry about making it ot.

I believe it's that you double the weight at 16 weeks old, and give or take 5 lbs, that's the estimated adult weight.
