The AKC.

Mhm. The AKC.

We all know that the AKC show judges/breeders have ruined many breeds. German Shepherds with their awful backs...And it's very rare that you'll see one now that has herding instinct. It's not too common that you'll see an Aussie that can still work well. Thankfully the Aussies haven't been completely destroyed yet.

I'm just wondering if anyone can find some kind of article or webpage that shows the changes of different breeds, thanks to show rings.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed is a pretty decent documentary that's usually on netflix, but you can find the parts on youtube.

Just be prepared to watch some pretty sad, and maddening, things. :/ The boxer with seizures nearly had me in tears. And you get a chance to lol at some of the things the fanciers and judges say--their ignorance knows no bounds.

Browse through the many website and blog posts of the Terrierman on the AKC and you'll find ones like Rosettes to Ruin

I will definitely check those out, thank you!

Here's one than made the rounds recently:

I have seen this video - actually, it's what got me thinking more about the whole topic. I get tired of people trying to defend the AKC...Not only do they allow puppy mills, but the way that they have ruined some of these breeds just sickens me. <_<

I want to watch that, but can't find it on Netflix! I may have to hunt it down on YouTube..

IMO, the ruination of countless breeds is far worse of a sin than allowing puppy mills.

I can sort of see the point of people who say that AKC isn't responsible for regulating puppy mills. Would it be nice if they tried to shut them down, sure. But the AKC isn't in the business of regulation.

But I just can't stand for the horrors that breed clubs, supported by AKC and other KC's, have inflicted on so many breeds in the name of conformation. Nearly every owner will choose health and temperament over conformation, if given the choice, yet AKC and other registries persist in placing their seemingly subjective conformation standards above all else. How many more dogs need to suffer through health crises brought on by breeding practices endorsed by AKC before they wake up and smell the coffee?

Even before getting my first (and only) dog, I hated the AKC. Never liked the attitude of "my dog is better because it's purebred". Never saw the point of conformation shows, especially when the announcers sat around discussing what the dog was originally bred to do. And I'm a biologist, so my education flies in the face of everything they stand for. Only after getting a dog was I brought into the loop regarding the feud (ok, war) between the AKC and people who care about working BC's. I have to say, I was very happy to find out that I wasn't alone in hating everything that the AKC stands for. It's nice to know that there are at least a couple of breeds out there that will generally remain free from their influences, with the hard work of people who care about what they were originally bred to do. And this coming from someone who will probably never have the need or desire to use a BC for its original purpose.

P.S. Loved the "Rosettes to Ruin" article. Thanks for posting!

The problem is that people just assume that because a dog is a purebred(coming from any type of registry) that it will be healthy...I'm not sure why people believe that, but I've noticed that most people do. People need to realize that just because a dog is registered, maybe even from champion parents, doesn't mean that it's going to have a good temperment and/or be healthy!

I honestly don't think the AKC will ever change what they're doing. They're in it for the money! If they cared more about dogs than money, they would only register pups from proven, titled parents. They'd uphold breed standards instead of letting these awful judges choose the extremities. And even they cared in the least about dogs, they wouldn't register puppy-milled pups!

I really hope the Border Collies don't turn out like the other breeds. I honestly think that the Border Collie is going to split into two different "breeds"! It's already halfway there. I can usually(not always) spot the difference between an ABC and an AKC dog in a second! There's the driven ABC dogs, and there's the AKC dogs. To me it seems like the AKC ones also lack the intelligence that the ABC ones have...I know they're still extremely smart, but when you look at their eyes...I don't know, you just don't see the intensity in their eyes like you do with ABC dogs!

I want to see more of this...
