Lure Coursing?

Recommended Posts

I have another question. I hope it's not too terribly ignorant, but I am a BC novice, so I would really like some advice. Borzoi breeder aquaintance asked if I would like to join in a lure coursing practice on Sunday with my Border Collie mix. Huh? She told me she has had BC's out there running and they seem to enjoy it. She also assured me that the dogs will not be running together. Dogs will be leashed until they're up to run.

Is this acceptable for a one year old BC mix? This is the same 8 acre, relatively square field that I rent to excercise my dog. I know Border Collies aren't built to run like sighthounds, so would this be too risky given her age? This would be entirely for excercise and fun. When my Whippet wouldn't run at this same site (many years ago), I pulled him out when I saw he wasn't interested. I would absolutely do the same with her. What do you think? Would the risks be higher than normal?

i don't see anything wrong/risky with it as it is simply running, as opposed to jumping or something else. as long as you and your dog are having fun, it sounds great. my dogs tend to be "disqualified" in lure coursing because as herding dogs, they want to try to cut off the lure rather than give it a straight chase.

That only goes to show how much smarter they are. The shortest distance between two points...

In any case, I'm toying with the idea. Thanks for your input.

I did lure coursing once with Daisy. Next to some sort of sighthound mix that ran the course, she was the fastest dog there. This was at a "dog camp" so totally for fun.

She didn't try to "cheat" but you could see her thinking about it at every corner. :) She seemed to really have fun with it.

I suspect Hannah would try to cut it off like the OP's dogs did. But if she does run as well as yours, that would be hilarious, given that my Whippet pretty much let me know that if I wanted that lure, I was going to have to get out there and chase it myself.

AKC & UKC both have opened lure coursing to all breeds. Any breed can now get a Coursing Aptitude title (or extensions thereof). The whippet club must only be doing fun runs? Even then, I have no idea why they would exclude other dogs.

I also tried it once. It was really fun to watch how the sighthounds' style differed from that of my BC mix. As the lure bounced along the ground, Kit was anticipating its every move and adjusting her course accordingly. Also, once the lure stopped moving, she lost interest immediately and didn't even touch it, whereas the sighthounds ripped the bag to shreds every time.
