Coming up on 1 year!

Cedar will be turning 1 year old this month. Some strange things have been happening that I can't pinpoint, but have ideas. It would be very helpful to know what is going on in her mind/body. Let me explain:

Cedar has always been a great pup. She never chewed up my belongings since I first got her. She was a terror with her energy levels, but still a pretty solid pup. Recently I had to get her spayed early because her teeth were in bad shape and she needed to be put under for a teeth cleaning (wanted to knock out both in one sitting). Since then, she has lost most of her coat and it's now short and brittle. I figured she was blowing out her coat and coming into her adult coat. I have seen this in many BC's around the same age. Then some weird things started happening... she completely destroyed a memory foam mattress topper, chewed up my toothbrush, and started chewing on a leg of a chair. So I thought, she may be growing in molars, but this is very strange behavior for her, especially since she never went through the puppy chewing stage. To top it off she has pee'd on my roommates bed twice. It happened last night for the 2nd time (on top of the memory foam she destroyed), the only thing I could think of is that she was jealous of my roommates BC's and I playing in the kitchen while she was locked in the room. I was in complete shock! The first pee on the bed we thought to be my roommates puppy (she has behavioral issues), but now I'm thinking it was Cedar all along. This is very bizarre behavior. She gets mental and physical stimulation daily and our routine is pretty solid.

Cedar is now crated when I leave her at home.

With that being said, the only thing I can think of is that we moved to a new house with a new person in it, about a month or so ago. My roommate and I have lived together for 2 years and she has 2 puppies that are 5 and 6 months old (don't know how she does it ). There was a 2 month period we didn't live together, but in cabins on the same property. So all the dogs have known each other from the day they were brought home. The youngest puppy Quilcene, Cedar has never lived with until now, but they are related (sisters) and love each other. The older puppy Twisp gets along fantastic with Cedar. They all have such a blast together. Since living in the new house we keep all the dogs separate, other wise the puppies go insane and it's total chaos.

Maybe it's the new household situation, but the hair loss and peeing just blows my mind.

Anyone experience something similar or have suggestions of what could be happening?

Edit: Forgot to mention that Cedar lost her hair before we moved to the new house, and also has severe difficulties with wanting to eat. I put her on metronidazole and she felt much better and stared eating regular again.

I really can't speak to her health issues - I think that's a job for your veterinarian, if you are concerned. But I have to ask ... what under-one-year-old dog has teeth "in terrible shape?" She's only had adult teeth for a few months, how has there been any opportunity for them to be so awful? My 11 year old dog has never had a dental, and still does not need one. I can't imagine a year old dog requiring one.

I would think that you might need a new vet, and one who is willing to look at her possible health issues. I can't believe a competent veterinarian would suggest a one year old dog needed a dental. That's just crazy.

The teeth, the coat, the peeing...I would be considering that there may be a physical health issue underlying all this...an allergy maybe? Thyroid? I agree with RDM that a year old dog with dental issues is a concern. I have never met a year old dog who ate any sort of diet with serious tarter build up.

I completely agree with the teeth being odd. I couldn't believe it either, especially with my 3 year old having pearly whites. When I asked my vet, she said it may be genetic. Since her dental, her teeth have stayed nice and white and she is eating really well now.

Maybe I should get a blood panel done.

Karissa,

Thanks for your response. I will get her checked out asap. I too thought it was strange for her teeth to be so bad. I've never witnessed this before. It was only only her molars, plaque buildup. I thought maybe she wasn't drinking enough water. When she eats, the food just sits on her teeth. After I noticed how bad her teeth were, I started looking in her mouth after she ate. I thought that maybe at the least, the buildup was from the food just sitting there, rotting away. Then when I took her to the vet, they said it was hereditary or just the hormone changes from the spay.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I am surprised at my vet for not suggesting her to get a blood panel done. I even went back twice to ask them what was going on! Sheesh, now I feel like a bad parent.

Time to be a good parent, off to the vet!
