Hi and welcome! :) Past history on Beauregard -- did you get him as a puppy, or as an older dog? Has he always been nervous and fearful?

Hi and thank you for the welcome. No he wasn't always nervous and fearful. It was after his first rabies shot that his personality changed and he became nervous and fearful and he's been like that ever since. We changed to a holistic vet and he does not give Beauregard any shots at all.

Have you tried a calming cap or TTouch? How about accupuncture?

I've just recently heard of the calming cap,it sounds interesting but I read you are not suppose to let other dogs run up to your dog while they're wearing the calming cap, in my neighborhood people often let their dogs run loose so it would be hard to prevent other dogs from coming up to Beauregard. I had no idea that accupuncture could help. I'll have to check that out. I do the TTouch on him. I'm also considering trying reiki. Thank you for your advice it is greatly appreciated.

I'd still like to know if you got him as a puppy...and what age you got him at....and if you saw or knew his parents.

Or...did you get him as an older pup or young adult...and the if so, the background on that.

If you know a skilled accupuncturist they can hit points for relaxation and stress relief.

It is true that other dogs react weird to the cap (at first) and it is generally better for at home (or in crate/car) noise issues as it often makes the dog VERY calm-mine lies down w/in 30 sec and crashes when she has the cap on. For walks you can also try a DAP collar (dog appeasing pheremone). I've had limited success with the dog aggression with my Kelpie using the DAP collar, but others report better luck but I suspect the issues aren't as ingrained as his were when I got him.

Sorry about that, I forgot to answer that part of the question. We got him when he was 9 weeeks old. It was my brother who went and picked him up from the breeder but I don't think that he got to see the parents. The breeder never kept in contact with us or checked at all to see how he was doing. I heard later that his breeder didn't have a good reputation.

Hello and welcome.

My boy Ross (in my avatar) was an insecure dog, frequently nervous. After 5 years of training and adjusting he was better, but still had so many issues. I honestly felt his quality of life was impaired, so with encouragement I talked to my vet about medication.

It was hard for me to take that leap, but once I did it, I wished that I would have done it years earlier. He was so much happier with the "edge" taken off. He slept more soundly, he could just relax at home without needing to scurry off when something scared him. He still played, snuggled, went for walks. He wasn't sedated in any way, he was just less edgy.

I am happy that he spent the last 4 years of his life in a much more relaxed state. We lost him in December...we still miss him.

I don't think medication is the answer to all dogs, but when you have made other changes and your dog is still having problems, I think it can really be a good thing.

Good luck with Beauregard.

First of all let me say I am so sorry for your loss. Ross is beautiful and thank you for the welcome. We go to a holistic vet and he chose not to put Beauregard on any medication. He has a very sensitive system and his body can't handle any chemicals or toxins. I am glad the last 4 years of Ross's life were more relaxed and that he got to enjoy them, it is so hard when they go but they always stay in our hearts.
