another question on oral melanoma

Recommended Posts

I have noticed a couple of dark pigmented spots on Stella's gum, right behind her lower canine, they're dark in color and I just noticed them a few weeks ago. Didn't really think anything of it till I read on here about a dog having it...they don't look like tumors (they look a lot like the melanoma I had on my shoulder ;-( ) but I know it's common for dogs to have diff. pigments on and around the mouth and nose. SHe also has some lighter colored spots on the other side. Is this something you think I should have checked out? I think I'm going to give my vet a ring just for the heck of it...rather be safe than sorry.

Ouch, hope your vet confirms it's nothing to worry about. Ouzo's lower gums are spotted, pink and brown, always have been, as is the roof of his mouth - mostly brown but with some pink spots. Could it be just some coloring you haven't noticed before?

Foster's tumor was the same color as the pigment on that side which was black. I read some where that darker pigment is more prone to melanoma but can't remember for sure.

It does not hurt to check. You can find a lot of pics of different oral cancers online. Many are pretty disgusting looking and can show up any where in the mouth.

Thanks guys ;-) I looked on line, and this doesn't look like any of those pics. The vet said as long as they weren't raised, she wouldn't be too concerned. If they changed or anything, then bring her in. Funny you should mention Ouzo Anda, as John made us look at Liz's mouth last night, and her gums were black around the teeth as well ;-) I think with Stella, it's just that this pigment just seemed to show up, I don't remember it being there before...maybe look at some old pics and see.

I also guess I'm a little overly worried/protective right now;-( it seems like so many people I know who's dogs are getting cancer ;-( the latest, Christine Kovals Rook ;-( diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma ;-( brought back memories of my Bob and his battle with that terrible cancer. I can't tell you how terrified I am of one of my dogs getting some kind of cancer diagnoses, and with 5 dogs, the odds of one of them getting cancer is probabaly pretty high ;-( I guess it's just frustrating that other than a few things, there really isn't much you can do to be proactive to prevent your dogs from contracting one of these rotten cancers ;-( I guess at the end of the day all you can do is all you can do...

  • 4 years later...

We recently went through something similar with our 2 year old BC. I noticed a new round ,very black spot on the floor of her mounth which grew pretty fast in size only. Vet said to watch it for changes, but he felt that because it was not raised it was due to normal pigment changes. Within 30 days of that vet visit she developed two more spots in the same general area. I became alarmed and brought her in for biopsys. After all was said and done several vets said that it was not a growth but normal pigment changes and no biopsy was needed. I have done lots of looking for information regarding pigment changes and all I have been able to find is regarding pigment changes to lighter spots turning pink, nothing about fast growing spots, pigment areas in the mouth that are black. Does anyone know more about this, is this normal for BC's ?
