nancy
I was about to order another bottle of Cosequin DS tablets for Fergie. And I found a list of other, similar products. Several seem to have the same ingredients and be cheaper. But the Cosequin DS has been helping Ferg, so I wonder. Has anyone used one of the many other things for an arthritic old lady dog? If so, what - and how well did it work?
Joellen
I use Ark Naturals Joint Rescue for my old timers, and those that have had surgeries (rotator cuff, TPLO, etc.), and have found it to work great. It has about the same ingredients as Cosequin, plus additional herbs and vitamins to help with pain and inflammation. Be sure to check the prices as it can run anywhere from $24 - $40 for the 90 count bottle. Best of luck with your old gal!
Lewie'sMom
I've used SynoviMSM in the past with great success, but it is pricey and I think can only be acquired from your vet.
rushdoggie
I feed small, old, creaky dog Dasuquin with MSN (which can be purchased online even though the company website says it can only be bought from a vet) and Ester C, along with fish oil, and he is doing remarkably well considering he is pretty full of arthritis all along his spine. Rave
The Synovi products were awesome (IMO) and available everywhere, but have since been pulled from the shelves due to issues at the plant. I've been hoping to see their return soon, but no such luck. I've tried out a few things since then, but haven't been too thrilled with any of them. Bluzinnias
There are products that are available that are formulated identically to the Synovi products. We carry the S3 Chews by Vedco but they are all manufactured by the same company that private labels them for others. They are out there. Dr. Canapp at VOSM recommends Dasuquin for his patients. And one of our vets here at my practice speaks for Nutramax so that is our "go to" supplement. Nutramax Labs is a class act that really puts resources into the studies to back up their claims. But just like everything else, some things work better for different patients so we carry the Synovi-like product too. Pam Wolf
My Orthopedic Dr told me that the Cosequin DS was definitely proven to improve carteledge. I use it and it works well (even use it on some dogs )
gcv-border
I also use the Dasuquin product on the advice of Dr. Canapp at VOSM (my dog had shoulder surgery and in general, is hard on his body). It was also recommended by the rehab vet I use who is so well respected that people will travel 3-4 hours for appointments. I buy the Dasuquin with MSM formulation through www.allivet.com. To save money, I buy the large dog dose and cut it in half to get the medium dog dose that I need. (Run the numbers yourself to see how much you save.) Having said the above, my other dog (12 years old) will NOT eat the chewable Dasuquin no matter how much yummy stuff I use to hide it. She always picks it out. She will eat GlycoFlex III when crumbled over her kibble. I also use the same trick to reduce cost - buy the large dose size and split in two for the correct dosage. gcv-border
Oops, forgot to add that Cosequin and Dasuquin are made by the same company. Jovi
MyTDogs
Talked to the DVM rep today & Synovi is back! I think Glycoflex III has worked best for my old girl but I had to stop it because of the MSM & her kidney's. I might go back though...quality vs quantity these days
Rave
I will look into Dasuquin, thank you all! gcv, I don't see the dose strengths of the two different sizes to see if splitting a larger dose is something I want to do. Did you find that information somewhere, if so can you share please? Thanks!
nancy
I went with the Cosequin again. Fergie is doing well on it. And, considering her age, I decided to not have her adjust to something different. By the way, Maggie da Cat tries to steal Ferg's pill out of the food dish! Thanks for the information. It's nice to know I can look back if this stops helping. You folks are great!

It truly has helped some of my most painful dogs in their old age.
gcv-border
I will look into Dasuquin, thank you all! gcv, I don't see the dose strengths of the two different sizes to see if splitting a larger dose is something I want to do. Did you find that information somewhere, if so can you share please? Thanks! Good question. I found the information on the www.1800petmeds.com website. In actuality, the dosage of the large dog tablet is not exactly twice that of the small/medium dog tablet. For the MSM and the ASU levels, the levels are doubled between the tablets, but for the glucosamine and the chondroitin, the levels are approx. 50% more in the large tablet. Since my dog is ~41 lbs., and the sm/med dog tablets are recommended for dogs up to 60 lbs, I feel comfortable that the dosing is sufficient. I also noted that the "other ingredients" differ by tablet. For example, the sm/med tablet is flavored with roast beef, whereas the large tablet is flavored with liver.
