Help Nickie!

Recommended Posts

Nickie, a daugther of Amanda Milliken's national champion Bart and my own Phyl, is a five-year-old working border collie owned by Nancy Joyce Simmons of Boonton, New Jersey. Nickie is Nancy's first Open trial dog: the two of them have been developing together wonderfully, with Nickie getting her first placement in Open earlier this winter. But while playing with the other dogs in her yard, Nickie slipped and came up lame. What was originally misdiagnosed as a partial ACL injury actually turned out to be a very serious spinal injury, complicated by a clot on her spine that probably developed as a result of the Rimadyl prescribed to help the suspected ACL injury. After being cared for by a canine neurologist, hospitalized, and ultimately undergoing spinal surgery, Nickie is still paralyzed in her back legs and faces an uncertain future. Nancy will be trying physical therapy in an effort to help her dog recover the use of her legs.

In order to help Nancy and Nickie, please consider buying a product listed on the web page below or donating directly. I know that there are a lot of worthy causes out there, and that it can be hard to decide which ones to support. But this one should touch all of us who love our border collies and value what we do with them. There are a lot worse things that could happen to all of us than snow, inactivity, and training frustrations. Please help if you can--details can be found on this page.
