Cold paws

Ontario Gordon

Recommended Posts

With being new to Canada with my dog, this being his first winter here from Scotland. I was wondering if anyone else was having a problems with the dogs feet. While out for walks he is pulling up with ice between his toes. Does anyone else have this problem, and if they do what do they do about it.

I don't want to put boots on him, but I have seen a cream on Amazon that is designed for winter and sled dogs.

Any Ideas?

Hi, I don't bother with boots. I just let Cricket and Dusty clean their paws as needed. That being said, I'm not walking anywhere with salt on the roads so you may want to try the musher's secret. You can also use vaseline, but it's messy!

I have a dog with "delicate" feet, and I do put Musher's Secret on him the first few days after a snowstorm (which is, like, every single day this winter!). He seems to be bothered by the snow in his paws and the salt on the roads - as well as very cold weather, too. Little wimp! After a couple days, the snow seems to change consistency and won't make snowballs in his feet anymore.

I tried boots and all, but they were a lot of work and kept falling off. Replacing them in the bitter cold is no fun for ME. So I gave up and just switched to the Musher's Secret.

You can get 200g on eBay for something like $16. I think I'm in my third winter on my first tub, which is just now running out.

Good luck!

Mary

What I notice is anything below...10F gives the snow a sort of dry ice affect where all the dogs paws burn. The workers will work through it but I can tell their feet are hurting. Thankfully I don't have much work during this time, and what little we do have they soldier through. It's been bad enough for my seniors that they stop walking and lay there looking pitiful. So they don't wander much right now.

If there's new snow or old snow and it's in the upper teens or 20's we're all good to go.

Does Mushers secret get all over the floor when they come inside?

OH yeah...Mary, Mick says his feet are not delicate, you go out in your socks and gather up a snowy field! Thank you very much! :P

I'm in agreement with Kristen, in that my dogs have had some "ouchy" feet this week with the very low temps and snow-covered ground here. But, if they are working, they are running right through any discomfort. Of course, I notice that the more active they are outside, the less their feet seem to bother them. But if they have to slow down or wait, then they get cold!
